'The Wholehearted': Story of a Female Boxer at the Paramount Center  

Now playing at Emerson College's Paramount Center, "The Wholehearted" is a performance utilizing text, song, and physical performances based upon biographies of female athletes to tackle the story of a female boxer.  


Collaborative partners and Drama Desk nominees Deborah Stein and Suli Holum dive into a narrative fraught with the violence of love, the sexuality of sports, and the truth behind the stories we tell ourselves.

Tickets Now Available for 'Downtown: Home Where the Heart Is' Tour

Tickets are now available to be purchased online for the Downtown Boston BID's second-annual "Downtown: Home Where The Heart Is" Home Tour, which is taking place on Saturday, May 10th, from 11 am-3 pm.

Fajitas & 'Ritas Celebrating 25th Anniversary With Cinco De Mayo Block Party On West Street

Cinco de Mayo, the joyous Mexican festival which commemorates Mexico's victory against the French in the Battle of Puebla, is almost here!

This year's celebration in downtown will be especially sweet, as Fajitas & 'Ritas (25 West St.) owner Bradley Fredericks toasts the restaurant's 25th anniversary of with a Cinco de Mayo-themed West Street Block Party. Annual Boston Shines Clean-Up
On May 9th: Volunteers Wanted


The City of Boston's annual Boston Shines neighborhood clean-up day will take place in downtown on Friday, May 9th, from 8 am-12 pm. As in years past, the Downtown Boston BID hosts the downtown Boston Shines. This year's event will target squares in downtown--Winthrop Square, the Kingston-Bedford traffic island, and more.

BPA Preservation Achievement Awards: Nominations Due April 30th 

Have you been admiring a development or project you think should be recognized for its "contribution to Boston's built environment?" Then nominate it for the Boston Preservation Alliance's Preservation Achievement Award!

To be eligible, projects must have been completed in 2013. Only Boston projects (such as the Modern Theatre, pictured above, which was an award recipient in 2011) will be considered. Nominations will be accepted through April 30. The awards ceremony and reception will be held this fall.

Suffolk University Center for Real Estate Hosting Development Seminar    

 

Stay on top of the latest trends and practices in the world of real estate with Suffolk University's Center for Real Estate 6-Week Professional Development Program. The Center's first educational seminar is "Anatomy of a Real Estate Development Project: 20 Somerset St."    

Using Suffolk University's $62 million development project at 20 Somerset St. (pictured above), you will learn how a real estate project is organized and executed. Topics include: acquisition, permitting and approvals, market analysis, construction, community relations, design and financing. This program is geared towards architects, lawyers, consultants, lenders, brokers, construction managers, property managers, university and healthcare facility planners, and others interested in the public and private development process.

    

Registration costs vary from $475 to $595. This program will take place on six consecutive Wednesday sessions from May 21st to June 25th from 6 to 8:30 pm. Click here for more information and to register.

Calling all artists and crafters! The Downtown Boston BID's Summer Street Arts and Crafts Market is returning on Wednesdays and Fridays from May 2 through October 24. The BID is looking forward to the market's continued success at its new location, 125 Summer Street Plaza.

Artwork must be original and handmade by the artist or artist's studio or enterprise. No mass-produced or imported goods are allowed. Artists and crafters are responsible for their own display materials and must provide their own white 10' x 10' pop-up tent.

Sweet Serenade: Downtown Boston Brass Returns For 2014    

One of Downtown Boston's rites of spring has returned--the Downtown Boston Brass Band is back! The delightful strolling quartet gives free performances in high-visibility areas on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from noon to 2 pm.

The band takes requests, with perennial fan favorites including "Downtown" by Petula Clark,"Dirty Water" by The Standells, and Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline." Enjoy the performances throughout the summer season and send comments and compliments to [email protected].
 
St. Francis House Charity Runners Celebrate Fantastic Boston Marathon

The Downtown Boston BID congratulates all who participated in and volunteered for yesterday's wonderful and historic Boston Marathon.

  

We especially thank the charity fundraisers who raced in support of BID member St. Francis House: Gerry Burke, Jeff Clough, Mary Collins, Molly Conway, Chris Hunter, and Kris Lokere. Emerson College to Debut Autism Research Lab 

Emerson College's Communication Sciences and Disorders Department will debut its brand-new FACE Laboratory, developed specifically for autism research, during an open house for the Emerson College community on Monday, April 28th.

The four-year $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health was awarded to Assistant Professor Ruth Grossman. The lab provides for state-of-the-art equipment that tracks eye gaze and facial movements with astounding precision, demonstrated above with a 12-year-old girl (who is not a patient) being outfitted with reflective markers
Grossman's research will focus on interpretation and production of nonverbal cues, including facial expressions, by adolescents with high-functioning autism.

Petit Robert Central Unveils New Spring & Summer Menu

A Spring Pea Soup with Lemon and a Pea Shoot Gremolata are just two of the new menu items at Petit Robert Central that utilize fresh and local ingredients. 

"You get so many different vegetables and proteins to work with based on the time of the year," said Eric Bogardus, executive chef for PRC (above, second from right) with Shannon Emerson Finks (far right) Milissa Laurence, pastry chef, and Wilder Gomez, sous chef. "We have a lot of great regular customers and we want to keep them engaged, so we like to change the menus as much as possible." Petit Robert Central is located at 34 Summer St. (the 2nd floor of 101 Arch St.).

Mayor Walsh Headlines IIIC's 5th Annual Business Leaders Breakfast 

Mayor Martin J. Walsh will deliver the keynote address at the Irish International Immigrant Center's 5th Annual Business Leaders Breakfast. The breakfast takes place this Thursday, April 24th. The IIIC is based at 100 Franklin St. (the Webster Bank building).

'The Ten Commandments' & 'Gladiator' Next in AMC Classic Series 

See Charlton Heston as Moses in "The Ten Commandments" as part of the AMC Loews Boston Common Cinema's Classic Series.

"The Ten Commandments" is being shown on April 23rd at 2 and 7 pm. The next movie in the series is "Gladiator," which is being shown on April 27th at 2 pm and April 30th at 2 and 7 pm.

Masonry Special Projects Ambassador
Wanted For Downtown Boston BID 

The Downtown Boston BID is seeking a Masonry Special Projects Ambassador. This Ambassador will be primarily responsible for repairs needed throughout the downtown district.   

 



Duties include: making small concrete repairs and brick replacements, realigning existing brick sidewalks, and engaging as many visitors as possible. The Masonry Special Projects Ambassador will be cross-trained to provide both hospitality and clean team services in the event they are needed.
