BID Family Affected by Marathon Bombings Creates Stepping Strong Fund at Brigham and Women's Hospital

It was almost one year ago when high school senior Gillian Reny stood near the finish line of the Boston Marathon with her parents Steven and Audrey Epstein Reny, waiting for her sister Danielle to cross. When the bombs went off, the Renys were among the many innocent bystanders who were injured, Gillian critically.

Within minutes, first responders rushed the Renys to Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). Audrey and Steven were treated for minor injuries while doctors and nurses worked heroically to save Gillian's life - and both of her legs. One year later, Gillian is on the road to recovery, having graduated from high school and started her freshman year of college at the University of Pennsylvania

Inspired by Gillian's resilience - and forever grateful to the team that saved her life - the Reny family launched the Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Fund at BWH, (pictured above are team members of the Stepping Strong Fund running in the marathon). The fund will support life-giving breakthroughs in limb reconstruction, bone regeneration, orthopedic trauma, plastics, and skin regeneration to help patients with traumatic, athletic, military, and disease-related limb injuries step strong again.

"We hope this fund will inspire hundreds, maybe thousands, to continue to come together in celebration of the kindness and generosity of spirit that has prevailed since April 15, 2013," said Audrey, whose uncle, David Epstein, is on the Downtown Boston BID Board of Directors.
