More Things to Know About GEM's Ed Kane

A recent Boston Globe feature informed readers of 'Seven Things You Should Know About Ed Kane, Owner, Big Night Entertainment' - and the Downtown Boston BID got in touch with Kane, to get to know him even better.

Kane explained how he came up with the design for GEM Italian Kitchen Restaurant & Lounge (42 Province St.), which opened in 2012. "GEM was an effort to recreate a very European dinner and club concept like you would see in London or Paris. The furniture, the floor and wall paper details, the marble at the bar, were all selected to create a very rich, warm feeling conducive to eating and later dancing."

Kane, a 14-year resident in Downtown Boston, is excited about the new businesses coming to the area. He's eagerly awaiting the Roche Bros supermarket coming in 2015, and wants more local bakery options, like the Paul restaurant opening this summer.

As a club owner, Kane wants more nighttime offerings,
"[Downtown Boston] is a jewel in Boston on many levels - architecturally, for transportation and commerce, and for shopping. I think we need to compliment that with some (more) vibrant, responsible nightlife and of course more residents."

Courtney Forrester Puts the Sweet in Sweet Cupcakes

Sweet Cupcakes owner Courtney Forrester is probably the most popular mom in her two children's classrooms. And the other moms are probably happy about the Downtown Boston cupcake business' modern age options of gluten-free, no preservatives, and no nuts cupcakes.

"It's real food," said Forrester while sitting at her 11 School Street location. "We have 20 different flavors of cupcakes every day. Eight of those are daily flavors year round, and 12 to 14 seasonal flavors."

Forrester said Sweet takes advantage of the freshest ingredients available, so there are strawberry shortcake or peach cobbler cupcakes in the summer, or pumpkin flavored cupcakes in autumn.

As for what's most popular, it's the Madagascar vanilla icing on yellow cake, or the red velvet cupcake.

When asked about future plans, Forrester said her dream is serve muffins, sweet rolls, with a hot cup of Illy Coffee. But for now she's concentrating on growing the flourishing business that has two storefront and a bustling catering business.
