Important Reminder: City Of Boston Snow Removal Guidelines

With Boston's first major snowfall having occurred, it is important to review the City of Boston's snow removal ordinances & guidelines. Property owners are required to remove snow, slush, and ice from their sidewalks and abutting curb ramps within three hours of the end of a snowfall. Violators will be fined.

The BID has received reports from the City of property managers using snow blowers to throw snow onto the streets. Please DO NOT allow snow removal teams to do this.

For additional information about snow removal policies and guidelines, please contact the City at 617-635-4500.

Downtown Boston BID Ambassadors carry out the following snow- and ice-removal duties:
  • Shoveling of crosswalks and sidewalk handicap ramps
  • Clearing/de-clogging of storm drains
  • Digging-out fire hydrants
  • Cleaning snow off of the tops of Big Belly trash receptacles
  • Salting/sanding handicap ramps and any other icy spots in the district
Please contact the Downtown Boston BID Customer Service hotline at 617-261-0066 with any questions about the BID's snow removal.
