Thank-You To Boston's Urban Mechanic

With Mayor Thomas M. Menino's announcement that he will not seek reelection, we look back at the many contributions of Boston's self-described "urban mechanic." His constant attention to downtown has reinvigorated the area and wrought an incredible transformation.

Mayor Menino has worked tirelessly with the downtown community to lead our district's revitalization. He began by advocating for the end of the Combat Zone, which set the stage for the development of the Ritz-Carlton complex. He also encouraged major investments by educational institutions, which led to Suffolk University and Emerson College developing new schools and campus centers in downtown.
These investments included the revival of the Upper Washington Street Theater District, a decade-plus mission, spearheaded by Mayor Menino, that was realized in 2010 with the opening of Suffolk University's Modern Theatre and Emerson College's Paramount Center (the Boston Opera House opened in 2004).
July 2012 Block Party

To help protect these investments, the Menino administration supported downtown property owners and other stakeholders in their advocacy for a downtown business improvement district (BID). After a successful campaign, The city's first BID was organized in 2010.

Menino's drive, passion, and dedication has made him a singular champion for our downtown district. His impact can be seen everywhere, from the revitalized theaters and new skyscrapers to the bustling campus centers and soaring residential complexes.

As the Boston Herald noted, Menino's "renaissance has made the city fun to live in," a place thousands of new residents now call home. We are all immeasurably enriched as a result of the Mayor's efforts--and will reap the benefits for years to come.
