My shade of black is different from all the others. ~graffiti from the late 80's in San Francisco

In honor of all the black cats and dogs sitting in animal shelters, waiting for a good home, we launch our "Back in Black" promotion this month, featuring some of the black animals presently at the Amador County shelter. We've added white to the mix to include more of the cats and dogs here that happen to be black and white. Plus, we think "Back in Black and White" brings a certain classic, tuxedo-like touch to the party. As a note to the "fashion conscious", remember: black and white goes with everything, whether you're looking for a lap cat or a running partner.

In the LINKS section, you'll find two articles that address the validity of "Big Black Dog Syndrome", a long-held perception that black animals--particularly dogs--are slow to get adopted from shelters. These links offer insight into the interpretation of the statistics that ours and other animal organizations rely upon to measure success in their adoption programs.

On the subject of statistics, we've got our own on the intake and save rate from all of 2014 (see the "Save Them All" chart below). Also, read about the Amador County Animal Control & Adoption Center's Open House on May 30th.  There will be more entertaining features than ever this year for both families and individuals who share a love of animals.

2015 OPEN HOUSE:
On Saturday, May 30, 2015, Amador County Animal Control & Adoption Center will hold its annual Open House at the shelter, 12340 Airport Road, in Martell. You are invited to come, tour the facility, and participate in the many fund-raising activities and entertainment. There will be animal related vendors (including many of our Paws Partners), a first-rate raffle, a petting zoo, a photo area where you can pose with your pet, fake tattoos applied by a real tattoo artist (Gina Casaleggio of Fat Cat Tattoos), even free food. Before his or her photo op, your dog can get a mani/pedi from Jan Sutherland of Canine Clippers, and there will be a low-cost microchip and vaccine clinic for your pet conducted by Dr. Alison Pillsbury of the newly established Acorn Hills Animal Center. Above all else, come and ADOPT a pet from us at the promotional price of 50% off the regular adoption fee. Most of the proceeds from this event will benefit "The Rusty Fund", a resource which is spent directly on the health and well being of animals-in-need at our shelter.

FREYA: Just an "ordinary" adoption.

For this newsletter, we love the stories that feature the co-operative effort of all our Partners when it comes to getting shelter animals into the happiest, healthiest, and most productive futures we can find for them. But here is the story of an "ordinary" adoption that shows simply what a good thing an ordinary thing can be.

Hello! My name is Jesslyn and I adopted a puppy from the animal shelter in November. Freya was the adorable tri-colored Golden Retriever/Chow/German Shepard mix that came in with two brothers in early November. She is just about 5 months old now, and we are taking good care of her. She has had all her shots, is in perfect health, and has been licensed here in Reno. We think she is just the best little puppy ever, and love her very much. She loves playing fetch, hanging out with other dogs, and hiking around Reno and Lake Tahoe. She knows how to sit, lay down, and shake hands, and is great with people. We feel very lucky to have her in our lives and look forward to many, many years of doggy-snuggles to come. Thank you! Here are some recent pictures of her:

Gosh, what a cutie! Thank you, Jesslyn.

DO YOU HAVE A GREAT ADOPTION STORY FROM OUR SHELTER?
We'd love to hear from you. Send your story, with photos if you have them, to Lisa Peterson.
