This month, Amador Shelter Partners joins Best Friends Animal Society in urging you to
ADOPT a SENIOR SWEETHEART. Unlike younger animals, senior pets are calm and have learned their manners. They are already well-adjusted companions: dogs won't chew your Jimmy Choos, cats have their curtain-climbing (and LEG-climbing) stage behind them. Both are generally more relaxed, making them ideal pets for older owners. As always, senior animals are available in all varieties, and their medical histories are usually known.  Our ACAC Adoption Center offers a year-round discount of half price for senior dogs and cats (5 years old and up) and for senior adopters (65 or older). So what are you waiting for? Come on down to Amador County Animal Control's Adoption Center and meet the wonderful senior pets we have waiting for you.
GREY MUZZLE: Focus on SENIOR DOGS
Grey Muzzle is a national organization with volunteers across the United States. Its mission is to raise awareness for senior dogs in need.  A monthly e-newsletter shares stories of the dogs they have helped. The Grey Muzzle Organization makes grants throughout the United States expressly for programs designed to improve the lives of at-risk senior dogs. Shelters, rescue groups, sanctuaries and other non-profit organizations are invited to apply for these grant funds. Since 2008, Grey Muzzle has provided over $420,000 in grants for senior dog programs to more than 54 non-profit organizations in over 27 states! Grants typically range from $500 to $4000, and can be used to improve the lives of senior dogs in whatever way the recipients see fit, such as orthopedic beds, special foods or medication. To learn more, visit the Grey Muzzle website at www.greymuzzle.org
On the BENEFITS of PET OWNERSHIP
We can all see the health benefits of exercise when we walk, play a rousing game of fetch, or work out with our dogs (see our January Newsletter
for dozens of exercise ideas). But, did you know that being a pet owner can also lower your blood pressure, improve heart health, and even lessen anxiety and depression? That spells a better quality of life for both owner and pet, and very possibly live longer lives in the bargain! read more
Pet and Livestock HEALTH ALERT for CALIFORNIA

Harmful Algae Blooms (HAB) and your Pets/Livestock

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (Calif.)
A third dog died Thursday after exposure to toxic algae at an East Bay park, and broken-hearted dog owners say the park district's warnings have been too little, too late.

"It's this green algae that's everywhere, it's fatally toxic to dogs", warned Katie Stone (owner of one of the stricken dogs), intercepting hikers at the Lake Chabot marina Friday evening.

"We see shock and bleeding abnormalities, and liver failure," Dr. Sharon Finster told KTVU. Finster is emergency director at Bay Area Veterinary Specialists in San Leandro, which has treated two of the dogs that succumbed.

"It's not unlike the damage we see from strychnine or rat poison," elaborated Dr. Finster, "there's almost nothing we can do to reverse it."

A REMINDER from BEST FRIENDS Animal Society
A TALE of THREE DOGS

For February's Adopt a Senior Sweetheart promotion, we're featuring three wonderful senior dogs who are at our shelter right now, waiting for a second chance at life with a loving owner.

BRADY: This handsome Lab mix has the most gorgeous black coat--thick and lustrous. Like most senior canines, he is calm and gentle, but still young enough to have zest and enthusiasm for play.

GARY: A consummate cool dude! GARY is mellow but friendly and seems to know something you don't--probably The Score. He is only just qualified to be a senior, approximately five years old.

MAIA: Sweet, sweet, sweet! MAIA is a large Pit mix with a lovely walnut brindle coat and a frosting of gray at the muzzle. She has a wise and loving nature. Being in her gentle presence is a pleasure.

You are invited to come and meet these great older dogs at our ACAC Adoption Center. Perhaps you can help write the story of the rest of their lives!
