Late last year, a call came in from someone who had found a dog, listless and near
death, in a Plymouth RV park. It was obvious to the responding Animal Control Officer
that the dog needed immediate veterinary care if she was to survive, and she was
taken to the nearest Animal Hospital where she was given extensive treatment for
severe Demodex mange that covered 95% of her emaciated little body. Once she
was stabilized, it became equally obvious to the ACAC staff that she would need a very
special foster home if she was to recover. One of our dedicated shelter volunteers took
on that task, and nursed her for 3 months until she was deemed ready to look for a
suitable home. A bake sale was organized by another volunteer at A-PAL Humane
Society to help with the costs of Millie's extensive care, and the search was on for a
special 'someone' to adopt her. This past June, Millie's new owner posted her 'before'
and 'after' photos on Facebook. She has been renamed Gracie-a very suitable name,
since she has thrived by the grace of so many caring people in our county's animal-related network, who coordinated their skills and donated their time to deliver her to her new
home, where she is plump, happy, and dearly loved. It is hard to believe that this is the same dog, and in a very good way, she really isn't the same.
Gracie: Snatched from the brink of death and given a second chance by the many
'good guys' who cared about her. It really does take a village. Thanks and
congratulations to all responsible, including her wonderful new owner!
