April is Limb Loss Awareness Month
Every day, more than 500 Americans lose a limb.
  • There are nearly 2 million people living with limb loss in the United States (1)
  • Among those living with limb loss, the main causes are vascular disease (54%) - including diabetes and peripheral arterial disease - trauma (45%) and cancer (less than 2%) (1).
  • Approximately 185,000 amputations occur in the United States each year (2).
  • In 2009, hospital costs associated with amputation totaled more than $8.3 billion (3)
  • African-Americans are up to four times more likely to have an amputation than white Americans (4)
  • Nearly half of the individuals who have an amputation due to vascular disease will die within 5 years. This is higher than the five year mortality rates for breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer (5)
  • Of persons with diabetes who have a lower extremity amputation, up to 55% will require amputation of the second leg within 2-3 years (6)

In Their Own Words
Mr. Clyburn
Donald L. Clyburn
My name is Donald L. Clyburn and my representative at Davidson Prosthetics & Orthotics, Inc. is Mollie Matthews, CPO. She has been involved in my prosthetic needs since I was in the hospital. She is always very kind and caring. She understands my needs and always addresses any concerns I may have. She is very informative on how to use prosthetics and does an exceptional job of making her patient feel comfortable in that knowledge. She makes sure that I have correct fittings and adjustments timely. She is very caring and alert to my needs.
For all of this, I was to say Thank you!
April is OT Month
Occupational Therapy Month began in 1980

As an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant, are part of a vitally important profession that helps people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities.

Your holistic and customized approach to evaluations, interventions, and outcomes help a child with disabilities participate in school and in social situations, assist a person recovering from injuries to regain skills, aid an older adult to stay as independent as possible, and offer the specialized support and services to people of all ages and in all circumstances that only occupational therapy can provide.

From all of us at Davidson P&O, thank you!
