Welcome to the Oregon Exercise Therapy November Newsletter!

This month I discuss how posture's popularity is both a good thing and a bad thing and what are the Top 10 Posture Myths. The second article talks about new research that shows many knee replacement surgeries are unnecessary, inappropriate, or questionable and what this means for people looking at having a knee surgery. I discuss Pope Francis's sciatica and knee pain and how to find and treat the cause of the pain and not just the symptoms. Also included this month is a video that shows a Warm-Up and Cool-Down for Tennis. This month I encourage you to be thankful for your amazing body and it's ability to live a pain free and active life.
Too Much of a Good Thing
Top Ten Posture Myths.
Posture, alignment, and functional movement is talked about everywhere and by everyone nowadays, which is a really good thing, but there are some problems that are arising from postures popularity. Just about every personal trainer, physical therapist, chiropractor, online health blogger, and gym rat calls themselves a posture alignment expert and is writing articles, posting youtube videos, publishing books, and going on TV shows talking about what good posture is and how to achieve it.

Again, this is wonderful that posture is being talked about so much and everyone now thinks about posture as being important, but not all the information being handed out is helpful or correct, and not all the information is consistent. This creates issues for the consumers of this information. I am going to discuss the major myths about postural alignment, explain where "experts" have it wrong, and help you the consumer know how to tell whether advice is good or bad. Learn the Top Ten Posture Myths.

Knee Replacement Surgery
New research doesn't support many knee replacements.
recent study published the the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology found that 1/3 of total knee replacements (TKR) are unnecessary and medically inappropriate while another 22% are questionable. That means only 44% of total knee replacements were appropriate!

Why are so many total knee replacements (TKR) being performed by doctors in the United States every year? Continue reading...
Pope Francis and Overcoming Sciatica and Knee Pain
Symptom vs. Cause and Condition vs. Position.
Pope Francis has apparently been suffering with knee pain and sciatica for quite some time and has had several trips and stumbles because of the pain and instability. Pope Francis has also had to limit his walking and standing because of pain. I want to give Pope Francis and anyone else reading this article some insights into what causes knee pain and sciatica and how to become pain free.

If you have knee pain and go to your doctor, he or she might say your knee pain is caused by: osteoarthritis, a meniscus tearpatellofemoral pain syndrome, an ACL tear, or that you might soon need a knee replacement. All these diagnoses explain what is damaged in your knee, but not why the damage occurred. Treatments based off these diagnoses will focus on the symptom and not the cause of the symptom and treat the condition of the knee joint but not the position of the knee joint. Learn how to treat the cause and position of your body by reading the rest of the article.
Tennis Warm-Up and Cool-Down
Balanced postural alignment prevents injury.
Tennis, being a unilateral sport, puts large demands on one side of your body, which over time creates postural imbalance. Postural imbalance when left unchecked leads to pain and injury. The most effective way to prevent injury and pain is to maintain your balanced postural alignment. This video by Pete Egoscue, founder of the Egoscue Method, includes posture exercises for a tennis warm-up and cool-down that will help you maintain your postural alignment and continue playing pain free tennis.

Your free 30 minute appointment includes discussion of your symptoms and goals, posture evaluation, functional testing, and gait analysis. We will then discuss the different therapy options that are available to help you reach your goals.

I believe that your chronic pain is not because of your age, genetics, past injuries, or activities you do. I believe your pain is because you have lost proper postural alignment. Correcting your posture will allow you to live the life you want to live and continue the activities you love to do, pain free! If you or anyone you know is suffering from chronic pain or injuries, encourage them to call me today - I'd be happy to help them.

Sincerely,
