OET NEWS
August 2014

The August edition of OET News features a great video about low back pain, an explanation of spinal stenosis, and I present the case that chronic pain treatment is ready for a paradigm shift.

I also discuss how exercise is medicine and can be as effective or more effective than drugs at treating many diseases and medical conditions. Dr. Nicholas DiNubile has even been nice enough to include a prescription for exercise for you. Featured is new research about the benefits of running 5 miles a week and an explanation of what posture, alignment, and vertical load are and why they are so important to your overall health.

Have an active and pain free August and as always, let us know if there is anything we can do to help you live, play and be pain free.

Spinal Stenosis
How your posture is the key

If you have spinal stenosis you've been told what it is and are all too familiar with the symptoms it causes, but have you ever been told what causes it? Often we are told it is genetic, or because we are getting old, or because of certain activities we have done. I don't believe any of those are the true cause of spinal stenosis. What do I believe really causes it? Postural imbalances.

New Paradigm of Chronic Pain Treatment
Chronic pain treatment is ready for a paradigm shift

Chronic musculoskeletal pain treatment is a huge industry that focuses on the diagnosis of conditions and diseases and the management of pain symptoms. This works great if all you want to do is manage your symptoms. People that would like to actually become pain free and return to living an active life are finding the current system does not work for them. They know it is time for a paradigm shift that will open the door to finding and fixing the root cause of their pain, allowing them to live, play, and be pain free. To learn why the current way of thinking doesn't work and how we can create this paradigm shift, continue reading here.

Exercise is medicine
Your prescription is waiting

If you have been to a doctor, it is likely you got a prescription for a medicine. Amoxicillin for an infection. Prilosec for heartburn. Synthroid for hypothyroidism. Zocor for high cholesterol. Hydrocodone and acetaminophen for pain relief.  But have you ever been prescribed exercise?

Exercise has been shown to be an affective prescription for diabetes, heart disease, many types of cancer, high blood pressure, obesity, depression, osteoporosis, sleep problems, premature death, memory loss, osteoarthritis, stroke, and many other health issues.

If you have any of the above health conditions or want to prevent them and your doctor has not written a prescription for exercise, Dr. Nicholas DiNubile has written one for you:

Posture and alignment are popular words. Every major magazine has featured articles talking about posture and its effects on our bodies. People who teach the Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais®, Pilates, yoga, and physical therapy will all talk about your posture and alignment and the dangers of bad posture and benefits of good posture.

But what really is good posture and how do you maintain it? Should you havto think about your posture all the time? Or should it come naturally and unconsciously? Does it matter? Find out by following this link.
