By Julie Gilbart
Greetings, friends. At the end of last month I attended the Winter Conference of the CFRW in Modesto. I fully expected to hear great speakers, meet and reconnect with many other great RWF women from across the state, and gather information - all of which I did. But what I never expected was that the most interesting, arguably even most valuable, part of the experience would turn out to be something that happened before I even arrived in Modesto.
First - have you ever been to Modesto? I'm guessing, like most people, your answer is "no". Well, I hadn't either. So, guided by the information on the hotel's website that the closest airport to Modesto was Sacramento, I flew to Sacramento. But upon landing, I discovered - surprise! - Modesto is an hour and 45 minutes from Sacramento. So, after a certain amount of uncharitable thoughts about the hotel, Modesto, the CFRW and my own stupidity for not having done better research, I chartered a Blue Shuttle. And that's when I met Alexander.
Alexander was my driver, and his accent made it clear he was not American-born. With a long drive ahead with just the two of us and nothing to do but chat, I wasted no time in asking him where he was from. Russia, he told me. "Oh," I said. "I understand things are very harsh in Russia, that it's very hard to make a living. Is that so?" Indeed it was, he informed me. "Because the government limits what companies can pay their employees?" I asked.
"No," he corrected me, "It's much worse than that. The government owns every business, and it sets the earnings for everyone. It doesn't matter if you're a truck driver, teacher, storekeeper, or doctor - the government pays you what it wants." Chilling to hear. Alexander then asked me where I was headed. When I explained it was a convention of Republican women, he said "I know nothing about American political parties. Tell me."
I explained we have 2 main parties, Democrats and Republicans, and he asked what was the difference., "Well", I said, "there are really only 2 ways to govern, no matter where you are in the world: one is with a big government where everything is centrally planned and people are restricted in their freedom, choices and income ; the other is based on the freedom of the individual and upholds peoples' right to determine their own life choices and succeed based on their own endeavors."
I explained Republicans were the latter, and that the principles of individual freedom we believe in are the founding principles of our country; He had never heard of the Declaration of Independence - can you imagine? - and it was rather exciting to tell him that it declared that people's rights come from God, not the government, and that's why they cannot be taken away. "That's what is written in the Declaration" I said, and "That's what makes America unique among nations." I added that was why I'm a Republican. Then I asked, "Alexander, who do think can make the best decision about how the money you earn should be spent - you, or the government?" "Me!" he replied without hesitation. I said, "Well, exactly. It's only logical, isn't it?"
He agreed. I wish I had the space to relate more of our fascinating conversation. Since I don't, I'll only add that he listened with rapt attention to everything I said, and stopped me to ask many questions - including the definitions of some words I used: "What is 'incentive'?" ("A reason to try", I said). "Impediment?" ("Taxes government imposes that keep you from success"), and much more.
When I asked Alexander if he wanted to become an American citizen, he said he had only been here 2 years, and had 3 to go before he could apply. I can only say, based on our conversation, I believe that if and when he becomes a citizen, we'll have a new Republican. Meanwhile, I will never forget Alexander, and I thank him for the vivid reminder to me of just how privileged we are to be Americans, and that we must not flag in our efforts to elect Republican leaders if we want America to remain the land of the free.
We are, indeed, the world's last, best hope. See you March 17th!

The February TVRWF meeting featured Judy Hoffman. She spoke on the Election Integrity Project and encouraged members to be aware of the serious challenges facing fair and accurate elections -- in California and in the nation.
She noted the voter registration is a serious problem for the State Registrar in California.
Hoffman reported there have been serious violations of election law -- including individuals who attempt to submit hundreds of absentee ballots that they claim are valid.
She urged members to participate in the election process to guarantee the sanctity of the election box. |
Hoffman said that we need to eliminate voter fraud or our republic will be seriously threatened by those who try to manipulate election results.
"Democracy is directly affected by those who manipulate the voter box and -- regretfully -- that is happening today in too many cases in California" said Hoffman.

Join us on March 17 for a fascinating presentation by Trevor Loudon.
Trevor Loudon is an activist and political researcher from Christchurch, New Zealand.
He believes in freedom with responsibility, not freedom from responsibility. His ideal society is one
in which government is confined to protecting its citizens from criminals and external enemies, and he believes in working with all those who are moving in broadly the same direction.
Trevor is also the founder and editor of KeyWiki.org, a rapidly growing website with the goal of unlocking the covert side of U.S.and Global politics.
Trevor Loudon's newly released book
The Enemies Within: Communists, Socialists and Progressives in the U.S. Congress is like no other book written on American politics.
The book is designed to expose, in layman's terms, the comprehensive communist, socialist and extreme progressive infiltration of the U.S. Congress and the Executive Branch of government.
Loudon will also show our members and guests exactly how modern communism works and how it impacts your life. Just how do the communists win big on things like Obamacare and immigration "reform" -- which go completely against the wishes of the American people.
Rarely do we hear a perspective on America's image from a citizen of on our Allies. So invite your husband, your friends and neighbors to this meeting. Trevor Loudon will grab your attention and motivate you to action with his dynamic presentation.

I have researched "Republican Motherhood" and I believe it will be vital for us to make a modern day resurgence of this very notion. Society and our schools are failing our children in teaching them what is the very meaning of America and what makes HER truly GREAT.
It's up to all of us to restore what has been lost to our youth. I would love for every School and Public Library have copies of true American history so that our children understand it's the American people that is great and not the government. David Barton is a great resource and has a full library of factual history. If we could all visit his webpage purchase a book,we could have a book in every Library in town. The book is available through shop.wallbuilders.com. Republican Motherhood was an idea linked to republicanism that elevated the role of women. It gave them the prestigious role as the special keepers of the nation's conscience. Its roots were from the idea that a citizen should be to his country as a mother is to her child "Republican motherhood" is a term from the time of the American Revolution and shortly after.
During that time, of course, the U.S. was becoming a republic instead of a colony. Americans came to feel that their children needed to be brought up differently in a republic. These children needed to be brought up in a way that would make them good citizens of a republic (as opposed to subjects of a monarchy). Republican motherhood was the idea that women were supposed to teach their children the skills and values that would make them good citizens.
This idea has been seen as a step on the way to women's rights. Historians say this because this was the first time that women were credited with having a major role in health of their country. If the country was to thrive -- the idea went -- the role played by women would be crucial. Women would need to do a good job of raising and educating their children for the sake of the country. This was -- and still IS -- a major responsibility.
