Article highlights:

  • "Black females [are] the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S."
  • "Women now own 30% of all businesses in the U.S., accounting for some 9.4 million firms.  And African American women control 14% of these companies, or an estimated 1.3 million businesses."

BUSINESS SUCCESS STORY SPOTLIGHT: NICK GARCIA AND TACTILE SIGNAGE

This month we share Nick Garcia's business success story.  Nick Garcia owns and operates Tactile Signage focusing on quality architectural signs for the disabled.  I recently communicated with Nick and he shared the following:

"I was born in San Angelo Texas in 1937. Been in California since 1946. Attended schools in Oakland, California. Graduated from Castlemont high in 1956. Attended California College of Arts in Crafts after serving in the USCG. Married to Sally Garcia since 1956. We raised 3 children. I worked as a display man for a large hardware company in Oakland. I worked as a display man for two display companies. Worked in the display field in the Bay area and later in the Sacramento Valley. Promoting sales at store level through signage and displays.

In 1971, we opened a restaurant in Carmichael, CA Called "Nicky's Gourmet  Parlor."

It was our first business venture. Subsequently, in 1981 I ran and operated "New Dimension Carpet Maintenance." We dyed carpet on location. We also cleaned and repaired carpet. Our primary clients were property management companies. Our employees were trained and had two way radios to communicate with our office. It was a very successful business. We sold the company in 1989.

In 1993 I started Tactile Signage Co. We continue to own and operate this business. We specialize in supplying architectural signage per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the California Building Code. Our primary clients are commercial contractors.

We also supply other sign companies with our raised letter and Braille signs. These are designed to identify rooms and spaces in places of public accommodation. The law is designed to help people with disabilities in businesses they go to for services. Our part of the law is to assist visually impaired folks find their destinations. It gives us a good feeling to know visually impaired people are able to work, shop and take care of other business due to our efforts.

I am 77 years old and do not plan to retire soon. I have been blessed to have had the opportunities to pursue my dreams and serve others."
