Forbes recently published an article by Gil Press that was a compilation of various surveys about the state of Big Data.  It is a very informative article.  Click here to get there.
 
Yellowfin BI announced the upcoming general availability (December 20) of Yellowfin 7, the latest version of their BI reporting and analytics tool.  Click here for more information.

Business Insider published a somewhat controversial article on some comments made by Google's top futurist, Vincent Cerf, regarding information privacy.  No matter your viewpoint, this one was interesting.

One of my favorite sites, Inside Analysis, posted an article on the difference between Discovery and Business Intelligence.  Check it out here.

Gartner just released the agenda for their popular Business Intelligence and Analytics Summit that will be held March 31-April 2, 2014, in Las Vegas.

Optimal Data Mart Design for MicroStrategy Reporting

MicroStrategy prefers de-normalized snowflake schemas, but this does not mean it is always necessary to "snowflake" your dimensions. MicroStrategy architecture can work with a star schema as well.  

 

This article presents some design considerations for MicroStrategy that includes techniques for certain situations to make MicroStrategy perform as well with a star schema as it does with snowflake schema.

Tech Tip of the Month: Loading Data into Amazon Redshift from Amazon S3

Amazon offers loading data to Redshift either from flat files that are stored in an Amazon S3 bucket or from Amazon DynamoDB table.  

 

In this article, I will show you how to load data from your local machine to Amazon Redshift using the Amazon S3 service. Also, for inserting data to Amazon Redshift, I will show you how to use COPY command.  Due to the number of illustrations in the article, it is only available as PDF download.
