Know Your Doctor:  Finding Quality Physicians Before a Procedure

In a previous article, we highlighted the importance of reviewing your medical records to ensure accuracy (to review the article, please click here).  In the article, we discussed:
  • Medical records are not always as accurate as we would expect
  • The reasons why many people do not review their medical records
  • How inaccurate medical records can negatively impact you, and
  • Some examples of how inaccurate medical records have had disastrous effects in the lives of real people
As important as it is to review and correct your medical records following medical treatment, it is more important to select a safe physician or surgeon before you elect to use them in the first place.  The challenge is finding a reliable way to evaluate medical service providers.

Insurance FAQ's

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT VEHICLE ACCIDENTS AND INSURANCE COVERAGE

Q. What if I do not have vehicle insurance, but I was injured in a vehicle accident?

A. You may be able to be compensated for your injuries. If you reside with other family members who have vehicle insurance, then you may be able to recover under their vehicle insurance policy.

Q. Should I attempt to handle my own personal injury case?

A. No. Vehicle accident cases are complex and proceeding unrepresented is extremely risky. It is in your best interests and the best interests of your loved ones to immediately contact the Law Offices of Taylor, Warren, and Weidner for a free consultation.
A new website has recently been developed to search your doctor's legal history. The website, www.docnosis.com, provides information about the number of malpractice lawsuits that have been filed against doctors and dentists. Additionally, it identifies two other doctors with the same specialty in the same area who have never been sued for medical malpractice.

Just because a doctor has been sued does not suggest the doctor is a bad doctor. However, if your doctor has been sued four, five or even ten times, wouldn't you like to know beforehand?  Docnosis is an excellent way to collect information in order for you to make the most informed decision possible. We want to be careful to note that while this website does not provide a comprehensive view of a physician's practice, it is certainly a helpful tool to aid in the selection of a quality medical service provider.

We believe most doctors will like this service as well.  The majority of doctors are excellent at what they do.  However, there is always a small percentage in every profession who has problems. Docnosis separates the majority of conscientious physicians from the small minority who cause the most problems. Docnosis allows the patient to identify the bad apple in the barrel before it is too late.

Docnosis is different from other rating agencies like healthgrades.com.  Docnosis has identified several instances where rating agencies have given a doctor an excellent rating with no lawsuits only to discover the doctor was sued multiple times.  One egregious example was a doctor with a heathgrade statement of zero lawsuits where Docnosis discovered the doctor actually was sued 41 times.  We think Docnosis is an excellent tool to help a patient make an informed decision.

 Chocolate Fest 2013 Announced!  April 27, 2013

Please join the Gulf Coast Kid's House Board of Directors for Chocolate Fest 2013.  We will present our 10th annual chocolate lover's extravaganza on Saturday, April 27 at Cordova Mall.

This chocolate is for a cause.  By participating in the 10th Annual Chocolate Fest, you are helping to raise funds that ensure child victims of abuse and neglect receive timely, effective, and streamlined treatment.  At Gulf Coast Kid's House, we facilitate a collaborative response to the abuse cases, ensuring that medical exams, recorded interviews, prosecution, and mental health counseling occur in one child-friendly facility.  This "one-stop" concept greatly reduces the trauma children experience and leads to better case outcomes.  In 2012, GCKH provided services to approximately 2,000 child victims of abuse and neglect.  Please consider joining us for Chocolate Fest 2013.  This annual event brings much needed awareness and support to GCKH and child abuse issues.

GCKH serves a critical role in our community, giving abused children a safe, child-centered place to report the abuse they have suffered and providing timely, effective assistance designed to address the specific trauma each child has experienced. Through this coordinated effort, children and families experience reduced trauma and better case coordination, leading to better case outcomes.

Case Spotlight:
Social Security May Not Be So Secure

The idea of social security is pretty simple.  We do our part by paying into the system each month as the government siphons off a small portion of our paycheck.  The system was setup to work like an insurance policy by spreading the risk around to everyone.

In exchange for allowing the government to take a portion of our hard-earned money, we expect some peace of mind, some security.    We expect that if we ever become disabled or incapacitated, then the government will step in and replace some of the income that we are no longer able to make on our own because that is what they promised to do when they took our money out of our checks for social security each month.  However, although the idea is simple, it does not always work the way it should.

Take, for example, the case of a recent client.  Our client was a female in her 40's who had worked tirelessly for years as a Certified Nurse's Aide (CNA).  As a result of the heavy lifting she did to make other people's lives more comfortable, she had severe back pain and had to undergo surgery.  Unfortunately, the surgery did not correct the problem, and she was diagnosed with Failed Back Syndrome (FBS). FBS is a condition that is characterized by chronic pain that continues even after surgery to correct problems such as a herniated or ruptured disc.  Because of the continued pain, our client was no longer able to work.  When she lost her job, she also lost her health insurance benefits and could no longer see her doctor.  Since she couldn't see a doctor who could confirm her disability, her Social Security benefits were denied.

Our client had done her part.  She worked hard and paid into the system, but the moment she needed assistance, the Social Security Administration denied her the benefits she rightly deserved.  The legal experts at Taylor, Warren, and Weidner, P.A., were able to help her appeal that decision and win the disability benefits she was rightly owed.  If you or a loved one has been denied Social Security benefits, please contact us for a free consultation at (850) 438-4899.
