Ahhh, summertime
Summertime brings fun and activity, but it can also trigger accidents and health challenges that are unique to the season. This summer, watch out for these seasonal health hazards:
Outdoor accidents
Boating, hiking, and biking are fun, but they can result in painful accidents. Be sure to follow all safety recommendations, such as wearing helmets and life jackets, and keep a first aid kit on hand while you're out.
Picnic food poisoning
Warmer weather quickens the growth of bacteria in food, which increases the risk of food poisoning. Remember to chill leftovers promptly and toss any food left sitting out for two hours (or one hour in 90-plus degree weather).
Mower injuries
Tinkering with your mower or trimmer when it becomes clogged can put an end to your gardening for the season. Stay safe in the garden this summer by having your tools professionally serviced and wearing protective clothing and shoes while you're working.

YOUR HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
Protect your skin
Sunscreen is important year-round, but especially during the sunny, summer months!
Keep these tips in mind when heading outside:
- Make sure your sunscreen is broad-spectrum. That means it protects your skin from both UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays).
- Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before you go out in the sun.
- Try to avoid being outside when the UV levels are highest, usually from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.
- Don't forget the easy-to-miss spots like the tips of your ears, your feet and the back of your legs.
- Reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, more often if you're sweating or getting wet.

Eating Right
Summer is a great time of year for so many reasons, but especially
for all of the fresh fruits and vegetables that are available. For those who don't have a garden or grow their own produce, farmer's markets are a great place
to get seasonal, fresh and local produce.

Stay active
Summer is a great time for being active, but make sure to take extra precautions when you are active outside.
- Drink plenty of water. This is very important when it's hot out and when
you do intense exercise. - Don't exercise as hard when it's hot. Take rest breaks. Exercise more slowly than usual or for a shorter time.
- Stay in the shade when you can. Avoid exercising during the hottest times of the day.
- Wear light-colored, breathable clothes.
- Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, such as nausea, dizziness, cramps, and headache. If you notice any signs, stop your activity right away, cool off, and drink fluids.

Stay hydrated
Water keeps every part of your body working properly. It helps flush wastes and stay at the right temperature. It can help prevent kidney stones and constipation.
You lose water throughout the day (through your breath, sweat and urine), even more when it's warm outside.
Easy ways to get more water:

- Drink a glass of water when you get up in the morning, before you have coffee or tea.
- Keep a cup or water bottle by your desk at work. Take several sips of water each hour. If you don't have a desk job, carry a container of water with you, and take sips throughout the day.
- Take a sip whenever you pass a drinking fountain.
- If you get tired of drinking plain water, add a packet of sugarless flavoring to your water. Or put a slice of lemon or lime in plain or sparkling water.
