TacTics Heartfelt Connection
Changing The Lives Of Families Everywhere.
Success Is The Only Option!

Hello from Linda Aber

child heart February is upon us with cold, winter weather, yet it also bestows the warmth of hearts, candy and flowers. Valentine's Day is  truly a celebration of connection. With loving cards and gestures, it is the designated time of the year when we offer our energy and relationship to those we treasure. I wish you all a very happy and loving Valentine's Day.

Why not make each day of the year a celebration for connection? How important it is for all of us to communicate daily how we value each other. For our children, this is especially vital, as they need our positive energy and relationship to guide them through their days.

Please consider the following programs and events listed within this Heartfelt Connection. Each one will empower and inspire you with tools and strategies to enrich your parenting role and family life. Invest the time to make a difference.

"The key to being a good parent is wanting to be a good parent strongly enough to make the time to do it."
                                                           Dr. Edward Hallowell

 Indoor Winter Family Activities

Energize Your Family Connection

We are delighted to hear that families enjoyed the activities listed in January's issue.  We thank you for your feedback requesting additional activities. Enjoy the following:

  • Balloon Kick- Have family members lie on the floor, on their backs in a circle formation, with feet facing towards the center of the circle. Using your feet & hands, tap the balloon to keep it in the air. Count aloud each time the balloon is tapped. Your goal is to keep it airborne to a count of 30 or more.
  • Build an indoor fort- Cover a table with a  blanket, add comfy pillows & a flashlight. Spend time inside your fort telling stories, jokes and listening to music.
  • Play Charades- This is an engaging activity for all.  Write down characters that will be portrayed, such as animals for younger kids, or movies, songs, books, television programs for older children.
  • Play board games, Pictionary or card games- These provide valuable lessons in skills such as patience, turn taking and fairness. Card games also provide practice in math skills.
  • Have a Pretend Snow Ball Fight- With a partner, throw cotton balls at each other while making silly sounds.
  • Popcorn Pushups- Fill a small bowl of popcorn for each participant. Each takes a turn doing pushups over their bowl while picking up the popcorn with their tongue.
  • Bubble Tennis- With a partner, blow one bubble softly back & forth to each other & see how long the team can keep the bubble in the air.
  • Cotton Ball Hockey- Each partner stands at either end of a table & attempts to blow a cotton ball across & off the opposite end of the table. The goal is to play goalie at each end and try to prevent the cotton ball from falling off.

Glass Half Full?
    glass
Shifting To A Positivity Perspective

  • Every day, many of us take either a glass half-full or glass half-empty perspective of life. Through the perspective of our choosing, we subsequently download our corresponding energy, words and relationship with others. We must understand that both perspective models are poor choices, for they fuel negativity, shame and fear.

  • We tend to ignore the gratitude for life, that in fact, we are fortunate to have the glass. The appreciation of  barriers and challenges we face and overcome each day, further promote our extraordinary strengths. Without challenging lessons, our resilience tends not to develop.

  • We need to make a shift! The Nurtured Heart Approach embraces a "Positivity Perspective", which enhances and empowers our lives as well as our children's. It is as simple as this: We have the glass and no matter where that level of water lies within that glass; it is "magnificent" and "incredible" AS IT IS!!. Yes, that water possesses a tremendous life force that emphasizes fortitude and resilience. The Nurtured Heart Approach's finely timed positive recognitions download success in every moment, building inner wealth while  avoiding shame and fear.

  • Recognizing the positive sides of negative symptoms or behaviours, "reframing "mirror traits",  as described by Dr. Edward Hallowell, author of Superparenting for ADD, is an example of illuminating Nurtured Heart Parenting. I love to share the magic of what positive words create.

Negative Trait                          Shift to               Positive Mirror Trait

Distractibility                                Curiosity, leading to great discoveries

Hyperactive, restless                                                      Energetic

 Intrusive                                                                          Eager

Inconsistent                                          Shows flashes of brilliance

Moody                                                                               Sensitive

  • The moment we choose a positivity perspective, we actually encourage children to believe in their strengths, abilities and accomplishments. By viewing that sparking glass of water, (reframing a more accurate and positive description of our children) rather that focusing on the water level in the glass, (the problematic part) we can nurture their mastery and success. They genuinely embrace all that they are and will become.

    use cracked pot
use this cracked pot
Author Unknown

This parable is a reminder of how we can inspire others by using a "positivity perspective."   When we see ourselves as flawed we miss the beauty we are sharing with the world around us.
  • A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, and while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water in his master's house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.

After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you." Why? asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?"

"I have been able, for these past two years, to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master's house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts," the pot said.

The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion he said, "As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path." Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again it apologized to the bearer for its failure.

The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of your path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you've watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my master's table. Without you being just the way you are, he would not have this beauty to grace his house."

"Intense" Youth
Angry                                   Disrespectful           Defies Authority
Tantrums                            Stubborn                   Sibling Rivalry
Low Self- Esteem              Defiant                       "NO" is never the end

All youth display positive strengths even when they display challenging behaviours. Those diagnosed with ADHD, LD & Aspergers, all have an "intensity". They form an impression through a culmination of negative interactions, that they can get more out of life through their adversity. Yelling, arguing, lecturing, grounding or removing privileges only fuel this impression. Traditional parenting methods tend to make it worse.

Promoting Respectful, Loving & Connective Relationships

* This unique, positive parenting approach will have profound & lasting effects on the nurturing relationship between you and the intense person in your life.

* We will teach you methods to tap into your youth's innate strengths that create successes in everyday life.

* When youth encounter success in experiential ways, they begin to thrive on the positive energy being reflected back to them.

* Your celebration of their success becomes the context through which you interact.

* Parents acquire skills to download a nourishing vocabulary of "positivity" and balance the art of limit setting with clear, simple consequences when rules are broken.

The core to the approach is love, validation, appreciation and respect. With a highly effective success rate at home and school, we will provide a 180- degree environmental and personal shift for you and your whole family.
