A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dr. Michael J. Coury
mcoury@fatherlopez.org

Earlier this week, six of our outstanding student-athletes signed national letters of intent to continue their academic studies and athletic careers on the collegiate level. This was a joyous occasion for family and friends who came together to celebrate in the Brown and Brown Field House. Needless to say, it was also a very proud moment for all of us in the Father Lopez community.

Our school has a very rich tradition in athletics. The many banners in the field house serve as a visual reminder of victories earned by the Green Wave. Additional evidence of success can be relived whenever two or more Lopez alums come together. There are many stories to tell, many memories to cherish. That legacy lives on and is exemplified by our most recent signees.

Signing national letters of intent this week were: Dominic DiGioia (Stetson University/ Football); Bailey Gillespy (University of Richmond/Track & Field); Jake Godbee (Norwich University/Baseball); Nick Ohlwein (Jacksonville University/Track & Field); Nick Theriault (Stetson University/Cross Country); and, DeVonté Woods (Palomar College/Football).

I admire these students on many fronts. They chose not to let injuries and other obstacles get in their way. They persevered, stayed the course, worked hard and further developed the gifts that God had given to them.

Additionally, they applied that same intensity in the classroom where they were rewarded for their scholastic efforts. They complimented their varied athletic achievements with a stellar cumulative grade point average of 3.818. They are truly young scholars and athletes, as well as wonderful representatives of our school.

Our congratulations and appreciation is extended not only to these six students, but also to their parents, coaches, teachers and teammates who helped them turn dreams into reality. May God continue to bless them, and may He continue to bless all members of the family that is Father Lopez Catholic High School.

TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS WRAP BANNER SEASONS AT STATE
Coach Sue O'Malley knew early on that this could be a great year for the Father Lopez track and field teams. Based on the results from both teams, it is clear that she knows her athletes. It is also clear why she was named the Daytona News-Journal's Track and Field Coach of the Year.

While at the District 9-1A meet, the girls' team placed first and the boys' team placed second. The excellent showing by the girls' and boys' teams at the Region 2-1A meet ensured a large contingent of Green Wave student-athletes would move on to compete at the state meet in Bradenton. They did not disappoint.

Bringing home medals for the boys' were the 4x800 relay team of Nick Ohlwein, Julian Povilaitis, Nick Theriault, and Noah Willis (4th place). Senior Nick Ohlwein also earned an individual medal for his 7th place finish in the 800 meters. The 4x400 relay team of Vicente Atanassou, Ohlwein, Polvalitis and T. C. Regan just missed a spot on the podium with their 9th place finish.

The girls' team capped off a banner year with an 8th place overall finish at the state meet. Bringing home additional medals for the girls' were the 4x400 relay team of Lexi Duckett, Bailey Gillespy, Caroline Lydecker and Zosia Yurkiewicz (4th place). Senior Bailey Gillespy (2nd place high jump and 8th place 300 intermediate hurdles) and freshman Lexi Duckett (5th place 800 meters and 6th place 400 meters) also earned individual medals.

COWAN ADVANCES TO NATIONAL COMPETITION
Summer Cowan '16 earned a place at the Florida History Fair in Tallahassee after her successful outing at the Volusia County Social Studies Fair in February. She attended the state event earlier this month, and once again, she had an excellent result. Summer's exhibit, The Apollo Program, placed second in the Senior Individual Exhibit category. Next stop, National History Day at the University of Maryland, June 12-15!

Congratulations to Summer, and to her very proud teachers, Kelly McCabe and Sarah Anderson.

THANK YOU, LOPEZ FAMILY!
Thank you for your tremendous response to The Lopez 100. Because of your generosity, we surpassed the challenge of receiving 100 gifts in 100 hours! This allowed the school to acquire the additional $5,000 gift from the donor who issued the challenge.

The social media campaign secured 111 gifts totaling $10,203. The names of these donors will be included in the recognition section of our Annual Report magazine that will be distributed in the fall. In preparation of that report, we will have a Printer's Proof listing of the donors to this year's Lopez Fund. The Printer's Proof will be published in an upcoming eNEWS. If you have contributed to the Lopez Fund, please check the listing for correct spellings and/or omissions.

Gifts to the Lopez Fund received between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016 will be acknowledged in the Annual Report.
