LENTEN SEASON BEGINS
| The most holy season of Lent began on Wednesday, During Lent, the Church asks us to surrender ourselves to prayer and to the reading of Scripture, to fasting and to giving alms. The fasting that all do together on Fridays is but a sign of the daily Lenten discipline of individuals and households: fasting for certain periods of time, fasting from certain foods, but also fasting from other things and activities.... click here for the full article.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dr. Michael J. Coury mcoury@fatherlopez.org
Amid much fanfare, the curtain on the 2016 production of Celebrate has now closed. I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to ask for curtain calls for those who helped make our 34th annual dinner/auction a fun and successful event.
First of all, I would ask all of our sponsors to take a bow. Before the first party-goer entered the France Family Multi-Purpose Center to help us celebrate, the financial success of the evening was already assured. Thirty-two different sponsors helped underwrite the event with $22,500 in sponsorship support!
The donors of auction gifts and services should take a bow, too. They helped us minimize evening expenses while also making available a wide array of items for the auction and for the raffles. Kevin Bowler and our friends at Daytona Beverages provided our attendees with complimentary beverages, while the floral centerpieces at each table were donated by Larry and Beth Lucas at Flowers Central. Dr. Joseph Mirante and the Docs of Jazz freely shared their musical talents for the pleasure of all attendees.
We thank the bidders who participated in the auctions--whether it was the online bidding version, or the silent and live auctions. Some of the more notable bidding results include $2,400 raised via the purchase of a premier parking space and naming rights for one year for our circle drive (Michael & Susan Dancsecs); $850 raised from the purchase of one-year of school lunches (Kevin & Jennie Bowler); and, $840 raised from the purchase of a silent auction item that included a Yeti cooler (Oscar & Liz Morejon).
Many donors also responded to our Call to the Heart by providing over $7,000 in gifts to help the school replace out-of-date computers. Their generosity enables us to continue to grow technology at Lopez.
More curtain calls are well deserved for our volunteers--students, parents and office personnel. Their preparation and participation ensured a smooth and successful night for all.
Lastly, please join me in giving a big round of applause for the maestro who orchestrated this entire event. Our Director of Development, Heather Voges Welch '02, once again outdid herself. As she wraps up this production, she is already anticipating our 35th edition being planned for February 11, 2017.
In closing, let me remind you that all proceeds from this event help us bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the higher cost of educating our students. Celebrate truly benefits every student at Father Lopez. For this, we can all celebrate and be thankful!

FATHER LOPEZ RECEIVES GOLDEN SUPER BOWL HONOR ROLL FOOTBALL COURTESY OF BRENARD WILSON '73
Father Lopez Catholic High School was one of a select group of high schools worldwide to receive a Super Bowl 50 Golden Wilson Football! As part of the Super Bowl 50 celebration, the NFL started the High School Honor Roll program to acknowledge high schools and their communities that have directly influenced Super Bowl history and impacted the game for the better. Recognized during a pregame show, this will become a Super Bowl tradition in the years to come.
Our commemorative golden football comes courtesy of Brenard K. Wilson '73. Wilson played for eight years with the Philadelphia Eagles. After beating the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC championship in 1981, they went on to play the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XV.... click here to read the full article. |

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK - A CELEBRATION TO REMEMBER
This year's homeless lockout was an unmatched success! Fifty-six students spent the night in the courtyard in temperatures that dropped to 42 degrees. Even with blankets and boxes, they were thrilled to head home to their warm beds in the morning. Participants donated 38 sweatshirts, 27 blankets and 23 sleeping bags to Halifax Urban Ministries and raised $6,100 to be used for our Feeding Children Everywhere meal packing during Holy Week.
Other highlights of the week included the Junior Ring blessing at Mass; the "Swinter Olympics"; and, a geek out. Service superstars were honored; a Flat Francis competition began; and, funds were raised by and for our mission team who served up pizza galore for lunch on Friday. It was a wonderful week of faith, knowledge and service. Thank you to everyone who supported our efforts, and a special thanks to our Parent Club for providing a beautiful breakfast for the faculty and staff.

LOPEZ ON MISSION TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Father Lopez theology teacher, Daniel Boyd, has been part of a teacher team on mission in the Dominican Republic this week. This is a return trip for Mr. Boyd. He chaperoned our student team last year, and he will return shortly with this year's team in a few weeks.
On March 5, Father Lopez will send its second student team to spend a week in the Dominican Republic on an educational mission. Danny Alvarado-Gomez '18, Palmer Cowgill '17, Sarah Eads '16, Caroline Herrero '16, Austin Keil '17, Annie Morejon '17, Christina Portuallo '17, Katie Rogers '17, Jessica Short '17, Mady Ufheil '17, and Brianne Yaryan '17 will be representing Father Lopez for the first time. They will be joined by three seniors who are eager to return for their second trip: Bailey Gillespy, Connor Nyborg and Alex Rivera. In addition to Mr. Boyd, staff members Anabel Borbon and Regina Boyd, along with senior parent, Joe Rivera, will attend as chaperones.

IN THE CLASSROOM
Students in Mrs. Fisher's English IV and Honors classes were presented with a real world project--they would plan and execute an actual event to be held outside the classroom. Thus, the Butterfly 5K was born. Through their persuasive writing skills, students locked in three event sponsors: The Bowler Family, Brown & Brown Inc., and McDuff Underwriters. They collaborated to design event flyers and t-shirts. They conducted research to raise awareness. Working together, these students created a well-run event that raised over $1,800 for The Graves' Disease and Thyroid Foundation (GDATF).

O'MALLEY HONORED FOR FALL, EXCITED ABOUT SPRING
Got milk? Looks like Father Lopez Cross Country Head Coach Sue O'Malley has been drinking her fair share of it! The Florida Dairy Farmers Association recently recognized her as Coach of the Year for leading 2015 Boys' Class 1A Cross Country team to the state championship in November. The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Awards Program is one of the longest-running sports awards programs in the nation. Over the years they have honored more than 5,000 of Florida's top athletes and coaches, including Tim Tebow, Alex Rodriguez, Vince Carter and Ryan Lochte.
Coach O'Malley, who has also served as head coach for our track and field teams for nine years, is now looking forward to a very exciting track season. Several of her talented and hard-working athletes are already showing great potential.
On the girls' side, senior Bailey Gillespy will likely be a state contender in the 100 low hurdles and the high jump. Lexi Duckett '19 (400), Caroline Lydecker '18 (triple jump), and Mack Harris '18 (pole vault) are all possible contenders in their events. The 4x800 team that missed state contention by three seconds last year is back with some new and rising athletes. The 4x400 relay team is also impressive.
For the boys', seniors Nick Ohlwein, Matt Roof and Nick Theriault are contenders in both the 4x800 relay and the mile. Noah Van der Burgt '17 (3200 meters), Vincente Atanassov '18 (high jump) and Seaton Waldhauer '19 (shot put) are all looking strong in their events. Here's to another great season for Coach O'Malley and her athletes! |
