A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dr. Michael J. Coury
mcoury@fatherlopez.org

"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" are magical lyrics that you probably heard crooned by Andy Williams throughout the Christmas season. Although the joy of Christmas has passed, it does not mean we have to forego having a wonderful time. In fact, with Celebrate 2016 just around the corner, we have an opportunity to extend these good feelings into the new year.

For those who may not be familiar with this Lopez tradition, Celebrate is our school's major fundraising (and friend-raising) event of the year. The dinner and auction set for Saturday, February 6, will be our 34th annual edition. It is one you will not want to miss.

The festivities are set to begin at 6:00 pm in the France Family Multi-Purpose Center. Riverside Catering has prepared some tasty hors d'oeuvres for you to enjoy while you mingle and peruse a wide array of silent auction items or squeeze into the photo booth for some zany photo ops.  Complimentary beverages will be provided, as well as a complete buffet-style dinner.

Dr. Joseph Mirante and the ever-popular Docs of Jazz will provide musical entertainment before the action heats up with a live auction, raffle drawings and the heads-and-tails game where the survivor wins an Apple watch.

Tickets to the event remain at only $65 per person and may be purchased online. If you would like to join the list of event sponsors, click here. If distance or other conflicts prevent you from attending, you may purchase raffle tickets for a Belle Etoile fashion ring from Tom Cook Jewelry or for a deluxe bike from Bob's Bike Shop. (You do not have to be present to claim the raffle prize.)

Everyone will also have the chance to participate in an online auction. Bidding will open from noon on Friday, January 29, to 9:00 pm on Tuesday, February 2. The highest bidders when the online auction closes will win the selected items.

Lastly, if you would like to donate an item for the auction, please click here for a donation form.

All proceeds from Celebrate 2016 support Father Lopez Catholic High School and the students we are privileged to serve.

ANNUAL HOMELESS LOCKOUT
This year's Annual Homeless Lockout will take place on Friday evening, January 29. Students are invited to sleep overnight in the school courtyard wearing only one layer of clothing. They can 'rent' sleeping bags, blankets and sweatshirts...for a price.  Students are encouraged to get sponsors for the event. All participants will receive credit for 15 hours of community service.

Click here for more information and here for a registration form.

Background-cleared adult volunteers are needed throughout the night of the event. If you are available, please contact Marie Gallo-Lethcoe.
LOPEZ ATHLETE TRAINS WITH OLYMPIAN
McKenzie "Mack" Harris '18 had the opportunity to train with Christian Taylor while attending an event at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University recently. Taylor, a triple jumper, holds American and world records, and is also the 2012 Olympic gold medalist for his event.

Coach Sue O'Malley reports that Mack tried pole vault for the first time and cleared an impressive 5-8. Comparatively, in our district, vaults of 6-0 have made it to the regional meet. Vaults of 7-0 have made it to states. Mack may have a great opportunity to increase her skills and take it to the post season this year.

LOPEZ MATHLETES AND ROBOTICS
Lopez Mathletes and Robotics started their first robot on Monday, January 11. Together, the Mathletes will work their way through putting the robot together one piece at a time! In addition to building robots, our Mathletes are also participating in monthly Florida Math League competitions and truly stretching their mathematical critical thinking skills.
Beyond that, members are also working hard managing the Math Tutoring Center which is now available to students four days per week during study hall (Mon-Thurs, unless otherwise stated). Students who would like peer tutoring in mathematics should request a tutoring pass from their math teacher. Our rocking Mathletes will be there to support your learning and mastery of mathematics!
