A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dr. Michael J. Coury mcoury@fatherlopez.org
A key ingredient in any recipe for mixing together a successful school is parental interest and support. When parents show an interest in their children's education, good things happen. At Father Lopez, we are blessed to have strong parental support and interest. This was most evident last night when hundreds of parents were on hand for our annual back-to-school night.
On behalf of Principal Pat La Morte and our dedicated faculty and staff, I want to thank our Lopez parents for their interest and support. Your visible presence sent a strong message to all of us--and to your children. You want, and expect, the best for your sons and daughters!
We want to especially extend a warm welcome to our newest parents. With our largest freshman class in school history (148), coupled with transfer students (12), one out of every three students attending Lopez is new to us this year. We thank the parents of these newcomers, along with all of our parents, for making Father Lopez their school-of-choice.
As the parent of four adult children who attended Catholic elementary and secondary schools, I am mindful of the many sacrifices that our parents are making to provide the Lopez experience for their children. You have a right to receive a good return on your investment. Our commitment is to ensure that your investment proves to be one that never stops paying dividends.
Please know of our prayers and best wishes for you and for all members of the family that is Father Lopez Catholic High School.

450th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION!
Welcome back to an exciting year at Father Lopez! September 8, 2015 is the 450th anniversary of the landing of the Spaniards in St. Augustine. The fleet chaplain on the expedition was Father Francisco López de Mendoza Grajales, our namesake. Father López is recognized as being the Catholic priest who conducted the first Mass at the first permanent mission and settlement in what would become the United States of America.
We join with our brothers and sisters in the Diocese of St. Augustine to remember this important day in our history. Mass will be celebrated on September 8, the day of the landing, and students will be treated to a 'Celebrate Lopez Heritage' event on September 17. |
LOPEZ LEADS
Students in leadership positions attended "Lopez Leads" earlier this week. Held in St. Augustine, the goals of the special leadership retreat were to provide an opportunity for student leaders to sharpen skills that can be applied through their leadership positions; to enhance collaboration through practical application; and to facilitate bonding among student leaders. By all accounts, the day was a resounding success!

INTERNATIONALLY SPEAKING
This year we welcome 24 international students from twelve countries: China, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, and Vietnam. All students come here to improve their English and learn about American culture; however, some plan to graduate from high school in the United States. The time they spend with us varies from one month to four years. Most of our students live with host families. If you are interested in hosting an international student, please contact Wendy Therrien for more information. Families are needed to host Colombian students for three weeks in October and French students for the month of February.

LOPEZ STUDENTS IMPACT THE WORLD
Five Father Lopez students spent time in Okahandja, Namibia on a mission trip this summer. They taught vacation bible school to AIDS affected children at a care point center called The Rock from June 29-July 4. What a wonderful example of our missionary spirit! Thanks to Lucas Van der Burgt '19, Noah Van der Burgt '17, Hope Dawson '18, Abby Marvin '16, and Gracie Marvin '18 for spreading the love of Christ in this remarkable way!
