A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dr. Michael J. Coury mcoury@fatherlopez.org
"Turn out the lights, the party's over" are some catchy lyrics echoed by the legendary country music artist, Willie Nelson. Those words resonated in my mind as Mary and I left last week's 33rd festive edition of Celebrate--the premiere event in support of Father Lopez Catholic High School and the students we are privileged to serve.
I am humbled by the tremendous support we received for this happening. Before the arrival of the first party-goer, the evening's success had already been secured. Loyal sponsors provided over $25,000 in donations, and the online silent auction raised more than $5,000.
With over 200 party-goers on hand, it was time for all to celebrate. Arriving guests were warmly greeted by many parent and student volunteers. They perused an array of silent auction items and enjoyed the delightful live music provided throughout the evening by Dr. Joseph Mirante and the fabulous "Docs of Jazz".
Many attendees opted to squeeze into the photo booth for some playful poses, while others enjoyed some pre-dinner hors d'oeuvres. Raffle tickets were purchased for an opportunity to win $500 in cash; chances were secured for the beautiful Belle Etoile ring; and, beads were sold to participants for the "heads or tails" game where one of my favorite Lopez grandmothers won some pretty neat techie stuff.
Professional Auctioneer Chris Fisher fired up the bidders for the live auction. Reserved seating for graduation weekend yielded the highest of bids, as it was purchased for $2,000! In a special appeal to help fund an item, attendees graciously contributed over $6,000 in beautification funds to replace some declining trees on our school plaza. We will soon see sixteen pink crape myrtle trees adding color to the Lopez campus.
Our Development Director, Heather Voges Welch '02, did a wonderful job in planning and overseeing the success that was Celebrate 2015. She is already mulling ideas to help make Celebrate 2016 an even greater success.
This party may be over, but another one is already in the works. Maybe Willie's next song will be "Turn on the lights, another Celebrate will soon be here"!
