A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dr. Michael J. Coury mcoury@fatherlopez.org
As January comes to a close, the holiday glimmer begins to fade. In too many cases, the brightness is replaced with the grim reality of those darn credit card bills. I know that many households, including the Coury's, could certainly use an extra $500 in cash right about now. So, here is some good news that I am eager to share with you!
One of the highlights at next week's Celebrate dinner and auction will be a raffle drawing for a cash prize of $500! Although I hope that you can join us for this wonderful event, you do not need to be present to claim your cash prize. You can even go online right now to purchase your raffle ticket. You may select one chance for $10 or three chances at the discounted price of $25. The statisticians among you will realize that you have pretty reasonable odds of claiming the $500 cash prize. The window for purchasing raffle tickets is only one week. We will not be selling thousands of tickets. It is even unlikely that we can sell hundreds of tickets in one week. The odds are definitely in your favor!
So, whether you live in South Daytona or South Dakota, purchasing a raffle ticket could not be any easier. Click here to purchase your ticket for that $500 cash prize. In doing so, you can also take comfort in knowing that you are supporting Father Lopez Catholic High School and the students we are privileged to serve. Here's hoping that YOU are the one who gets that lucky ticket!

HOMELESS LOCK-OUT HELPS OTHERS The Father Lopez PeaceJam Club held its annual Homeless Awareness Lockout last weekend. Sixty-two students braved the rain and cold weather while spending the night in cardboard boxes. The event not only raised awareness of what it means to be homeless, it also provided needed items that were donated to the Halifax Urban Ministries to help the homeless in our area. Funds were also raised to help feed children in the Central Florida area.
Sophomore Andres (Andy) Feuerbacher was one of the participants. He found the experience to be humbling and eye-opening. He shared his perspective in an article he prepared for Faith News Online. Click here to read Andy's article.
Mrs. Marie Gallo-Lethcoe, our Director of Mission Effectiveness, is the PeaceJam Club Moderator who organizes and provides this learning experience for our students.

AMERICAN FLAG PRESENTED TO LOPEZ
Commander Gene Swarbrick from the Father John Washington Post 1944 of Catholic War Veterans of America recently presented an American flag to the school. This flag had flown over the United States Capitol especially for our school.
The following notation appeared on the certificate that accompanied the flag.
"At the request of the Honorable John L. Mica, Member of Congress, this flag was flown for Father Lopez Catholic High School in Daytona Beach, Florida to honor all veterans and active duty personnel in the Armed Forces of the United States of America."
Commander Swarbrick presented the flag and certificate to School President Michael Coury and Principal Lee Sayago. |
MILLER HONORED FOR 20 YEARS COACHING
The Athletic Department would like to recognize Coach Eddie Miller for his 20 seasons of coaching our varsity boys' basketball team. Coach Miller has the second longest coaching tenure here at Father Lopez, second only behind our own Dancing Green Wave Coach, Ms. Kathy Blais.
Coach Miller is hands-down the most respected boys' basketball coach in Volusia County, if not in all of Central Florida. He has six of his alumni athletes currently playing on the college level at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Mercer University, Daytona State College and St. Michael's College. He has several more former players who are respected basketball coaches on the college and high school level. Click here for the full article. |
SACRED HEART/LOPEZ SUPPORTER TO BE RECOGNIZED
Mr. Bob Svoboda has been unanimously recommended by the Board of Directors of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) to receive the John F. Meyers Award, which will be presented at the annual NCEA convention this year in Orlando.

Mr. Svoboda founded the Donna-Dale Freedom Foundation that provides yearly support in the way of scholarships to both Sacred Heart and Father Lopez.
