A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dr. Michael J. Coury mcoury@fatherlopez.org
Not too many years ago, the first of our four children was beginning the college application process. As soon-to-be parents of a high school graduate, Mary and I did not know quite what to expect. Even though I had spent my entire career in the educational field, I was now trying to help our own son maneuver through the maze of college applications. For many years, I heard our school's guidance counselors talk about FAFSA. Now it was our turn to "FAFSA" for the first time. If you are new to this process, FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Completing a FAFSA application is a key not only for federal assistance, but also for many state and college-based aid programs. I still remember the "sticker shock" I experienced when we completed our first FAFSA and discovered what the government felt we could afford to pay. OMG was my reaction as I humbly stared at the EFC number--the Expected Family Contribution. Didn't they know we also had three younger children in Catholic schools? Today, Mary and I no longer need to fret about FAFSA. We are blessed that all four of our children were able to move forward and earn their college degrees. However, I do empathize with parents who are now entering this stage of their lives. For Lopez families, the good news is that our Guidance Department is here to help you make sense of FAFSA, Florida Bright Futures, Early Decisions and all else that is important in the college application process. With that in mind, I encourage you to take advantage of the College Information and Financial Aid Night program being offered next week. In addition to our own personnel, a finance officer from Stetson University will share valuable information from the perspective of the colleges and universities. The program begins at 6:30 pm on Thursday, January 22, in the France Family Multi-Purpose Center. It is open to parents of all Lopez students. As one who has been there, let me say it is never too early to prepare yourself for this next leg of life's journey. I wish the best for you. |

PROJECT SHARE CHRISTMAS UPDATE
Project Share, the official Christmas Service Project of Rotary Club of Flagler Beach, is dedicated to making Christmas dreams come true for children in need. With the help of the Father Lopez community and others in 2014, toys were provided for over 1,100 children, most of whom are the children of farm workers in nearby Pierson. A contingent of students who are members of National Honor Society and/or S. A. D. D. also helped distribute the gifts.
