A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dr. Michael J. Coury
mcoury@fatherlopez.org

Grandparents are very special people! I say that not because Mary and I joined their ranks for the first time in July. Rather, I witness many examples of ongoing love, interest and kindness whenever I meet Lopez grandparents at a variety of school events.

Please forgive me for not mentioning any grandparents by name. At my "grandfatherly" age, I suspect that I would inadvertently leave out the names of some of these loving people.

Grandparents are the ones beaming with pride when their grandson makes a tackle on the football field or when their granddaughter serves an ace in volleyball. Perhaps they are reliving memories of watching their sons and daughters as their grandchildren take a bow on stage, bring home a report card filled with A's, or perform meaningful service to help others in need.

Grandparents are the pillars of their families. They are the first teachers of their children--the parents of our current students. Grandparents are the ones who have passed on the gifts of wisdom and kindness through one generation to yet another. For this, we are all most appreciative.

We will be remembering all of our grandparents in a very special way during an all-school Mass on Wednesday, November 4. Grandparents of our current students are invited to join their grandchildren at this Mass and to be our guest for a light luncheon afterwards. So we may plan accordingly, please RSVP to Heather Welch by Friday, October 31. Then on November 4, grandparents may check in at our courtyard gate by 10:10 am. They will be escorted to special seating with their grandchildren.

In closing, let me reiterate our appreciation to all Lopez grandparents for the special gift that they are not only for their own children, but also for their grandchildren--the students we are honored to teach in our school.
LOPEZ TEACHER SELECTED FOR MISSION OFFICE POSITION
Principal Lee Sayago has announced that Nelson Matthew has been selected  to serve as the Assistant Director of the Diocese of Orlando Mission Office. Mr. Matthew has been teaching at Lopez since 2011. He has recently been on special assignment to our sister school in the Dominican Republic. Mr. Matthew will be remembered fondly at Lopez for his big smile, deep faith and warm heart. We wish him well as he begins in his new role on Monday, October 27. Vaya con Dios, Senor Matteo!

Chris Hazlewood will continue with Mr. Matthew's classes through the end of the school year. He holds a BA from the University of Texas at Austin, with a major in Spanish and a minor in French and Italian. He has taught at both the high school and college levels.
WELCOME BACK, MR. PAPINEAU
We are happy to welcome our Chemistry teacher, Dale Papineau, back to Lopez. Charlie King will continue to assist Mr. Papineau while he transitions back to his full teaching schedule. We are very grateful to Mr. King for stepping in under such short notice.
COLOMBIAN YOUTH AMBASSADORS VISIT
Bienvenidos! This week and next, we welcome 12 Colombian high school students who will experience "a day in the life" of an American student at Father Lopez. These students come to us through the State Department funded Youth Ambassadors leadership development program. The students will spend three weeks in Florida experiencing many educational and cultural activities. Two of our Lopez families, the Harshmans and McPhersons, are hosting a student.

SADD PROMOTES SAFE DRIVING
A crashed car on campus set the scene for students as they arrived at school Wednesday. With the assistance of Rue, Ziffra & Caldwell, the Father Lopez chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) hosted several activities to raise awareness about the deadly dangers of distracted driving. In addition to the visual of the crashed car on campus, their efforts included a safe driver pledge, guest speakers, and a texting and driving simulator.
Students attempted to text and drive in the simulator as virtual drivers swerved around them, lights suddenly turned red, and pedestrians suddenly appeared as they swerved off road. Many a virtual pedestrian bore the brunt during the eye-opening exercise!
