A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dr. Michael J. Coury mcoury@fatherlopez.org
As you enjoy your final weeks of summer, I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of the excitement anticipated for the new school year. Most of our readers already know that we will establish another record enrollment when classes resume on Tuesday, August 12. Our unofficial count of 482 students will easily top the all-time high of 438 that was set this past year. Please know that we greatly appreciate the trust that Lopez families are placing in us. We understand your expectations, and we plan to work hard to exceed those expectations! During the summer, we have invested heavily in what I will call "the three T's" -- Teachers, Technology and Transportation. To better meet the needs of our growing student population, we have added 4.5 teaching positions. We also filled four faculty vacancies. Seven of the newly-hired teachers have graduate degrees, including the newest member of our Math Department who has a doctoral degree. Our newcomers hail from Florida, Ohio and Kentucky. Some of the area high schools in which they have successfully taught include Mainland, Matanzas, Bishop Moore and Dr. Phillips. We are pleased that they have accepted our invitation to join the stellar faculty that is already in place at Lopez. (You will learn more about our newcomers when we present their brief bios in an upcoming edition of eNEWS. Since our new Athletic Director will begin his duties before school resumes, we have included his bio in the next article.)Technology and transportation needs were also addressed during the summer. Forty-five new laptops have been secured for faculty use. The older laptops will be refurbished and recycled to meet other needs. To improve our transportation services, a new activity bus was purchased. It replaces a vehicle that was older than most of our students. The new bus and another activity bus are being "branded". Both buses will proudly convey the message that Father Lopez Catholic High School in Daytona Beach, Florida has been providing "A Valued Education Since 1959". As we finalize preparations for the new school year, I ask for your continued prayers and support for our school and for the students we serve. Know that we are keeping you and all members of the family that is Father Lopez Catholic High School in our prayers. |
NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR APPOINTED
We are pleased to announce that Scott J. Drabczyk is the new Athletic Director at Father Lopez. He had been the Athletic Director at the 2,100 student Ocoee High School in Orange County for the past four years. Prior to that, he was a history teacher, head golf coach and Assistant Athletic Director at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando for four years.
Originally from nearby Palm Coast, Drabczyk graduated with honors from Bethune-Cookman University. He was a member of the men's golf team at BC-U. He also graduated magna cum laude from Stetson University, where he earned his Master's Degree in Educational Leadership.
At Lopez, nearly 70 percent of our students participate on one or more of the 20 sports teams offered. Drabczyk wants Lopez athletics to be a positive experience for students, one that can provide teachable lessons and virtues that last for a lifetime. |
