Chilectra Completes 8th ACCC Installation in Santiago Chile

ACCC Conductor Installed to Increase Line Capacity

In 2008, after performing a technical and economic evaluation of the ACCC conductor for use on Chilectra's 110 kV distribution system in Santiago, Chile, Chilectra completed their first ACCC installation.  Today, Chilectra has over 170 kilometers of ACCC installed.

Chilectra selected CTC Global's 430 kcmil 'Linnet' and 1,078 kcmil 'Hamburg' size conductors to replace 2/0 and 350 kcmil copper and 800 and 1,000 kcmil AASC "Aluminum Alloy Stranded Conductor."

Prior to Chilectra's first installation, CTC's engineering team provided technical support, and field personnel were deployed to Chilectra's facility and project sites to demonstrate proper splice, dead-end and stringing techniques. CTC's field support members remained on site during the first project and returned to support other projects.

During one project, in 2010, the sixth largest earthquake ever recorded by a seismograph occurred southwest of Santiago.  The earthquake registered a magnitude of 8.8.  While outages did
occur as a result of structural damage throughout many cities in Santiago and other regions, Chilectra's 110 kV reconductor project was not impacted.

Chilectra, S.A. is one of the largest Distribution Companies in Chile and part of the Enersis group of companies. Chilectra operates in the Santiago region which includes Chile's capital city and surrounding region encompassing approximately 2,052 square kilometers and a population of over five million people.

Santiago is Chile's economic center where demand for electricity is growing at a rate of nearly 5 percent annually. Approximately 35 percent of Chile's generation comes from hydro sources with the remainder being fossil fuels, primarily natural gas. Considering the relatively short distance from the mountains to the ocean and other factors, including periods of draught, the potential growth of hydro sources is limited. Currently a number of new combined cycle natural gas fired plants are being built to accommodate growing demand.

Considering their rapidly growing demand and Chile's need to import most of their fossil fuels, Chilectra has been very proactive when it comes to increasing line capacity and reducing line losses. CTC Global greatly appreciates Chilectra's deployment of ACCC conductor and looks forward to supporting them further in the coming years.

 CCP Software

Makes ACCC Conductor
Selection Easy

Responding to an ever-increasing demand to help select the most appropriate size of the highest performing ACCC conductor available, CTC Global has developed a new software program, CCP.

The program is available at no charge to utility planners, transmission engineers and others involved in conductor selection, project engineering and project economics. Using the design parameters associated with your specific project, CCP can calculate and compare ampacity, sag, tension, line losses, and the economics associated with the reduction in thermal sag and line losses the ACCC conductor offers compared to any other conductor of the same diameter and weight.

CTC Global's staff consists of dozens of individuals whose varied skill sets help us deliver the highest quality products and services, worldwide.  In this issue, we'd like to acknowledge Chip White.

Chip started his tenure at CTC in 2004 as a project manager helping coordinate production and logistics for CTC's customers globally.  His expertise with ancillary components, hardware and installation equipment continue to help us and our customers overcome challenges.  With extensive field experience, Chip now serves as Field Service Supervisor and also supports a number of 'Special Projects.'

Chip is everyone's "Go-To Guy" not only because of his substantial knowledge and experience, but also because he knows how to get the job done - right now and the right way.

Whether your project is located in the hottest desert or the coldest mountain range, Chip can help you get it done.  If you happen to be working near the ocean, river or lake, Chip would surely be willing to share his fishing expertise with you during the rare off hours. He knows how to reel in the big ones.

When Chip is not working in the field, scaring fish, or cooking, he enjoys supporting his super athletic son affectionately known as "H." H is a star athlete and competes in swimming and water polo for both his high school and club teams. Recently his team took home the KAP-7 Cup.

Chip has a number of reasons to be very proud of his son and CTC has an equal number of reasons to be very proud of Chip.  With little exception you'd have to agree that we are all very fortunate and enjoy our work.  Being able to work with guys like Chip makes it that much better.

Thanks Chip! We sincerely appreciate all that you do for CTC, ourselves and our customers.
