Michigan Becomes Right-to-Work State

On December 4, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed into law a bill making Michigan the Nation's 24th right-to-work state despite public opposition from unions and pro-union forces that have long considered Michigan to be a safe haven for organized labor. The law is expected to take effect on April 1, and will cover all public and private employers in Michigan.

EEOC Approves Strategic Plan

On December 18, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced an approved strategic plan for fiscal years 2013 to 2016. While the new plan recognizes regional differences, the plan identifies six Nationwide priorities.

  1. Eliminating systemic barriers in recruitment and hiring;
  2. Protecting immigrant, migrant and other vulnerable workers;
  3. Addressing emerging issues, including disability bias claims, accommodations for pregnant women who are forced to take unpaid leave, and protection for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered individuals;
  4. Enforcing equal pay laws;
  5. Preserving access to the legal system; and
  6. Combating harassment.
