Kings Dominion Music Festival
This weekend, our Middle School String Orchestra participated in the Kings Dominion Music Festival.  The students performed three pieces of music in front of a panel of three judges.  The CES Orchestra received an "Excellent" rating and took home a plaque, to be displayed in the CES Jefferson Building Entrance.  Congratulations for all of your hard work, and thank you to Mrs. Barnes!

Dear CES Parents:

Our Head of School for the Day on Monday, May 2 was Alejandra B. ('21), and she has deemed this Friday's Casual Dress Day as Pajama Day.  Your children are welcome to wear their pajamas to school.  She has also stated, however, that if your child would prefer just to have a casual dress day and wear regular clothes that is okay, too.  Her other recommendation for the school is that everyone should enjoy an additional ten minutes of recess.  Of course, each of these mandates were very well received by both students and faculty.  We are looking forward to a more relaxed Friday and having a little extra play time.  Thank you, Alejandra!

Today, we are all preparing for tonight's musical performance by the kindergarten through fourth grade classes.  I have seen some of the rehearsals and also saw the face painting rehearsal a week or so ago.  I hope many of you will come tonight at 6:00 to cheer on some of our youngest actors.

On Friday, May 6 we are hosting our spring book fair at the Barnes and Noble at the Rio Washingtonian Center.  We hope you will drop by after school to buy books.  If you cannot, please go on-line to order books.  There are directions attached about how to insure that your purchases are credited to CES.

All of these activities are another reminder that we are in the final month of school.  There is so much to do and so little time.  Hang on for the wild ride that will take us to June 3!

With love and gratitude,

Caroline Chapin, Ed.D

  Middle School Sports Banquet

Last Thursday evening, the annual Sports Banquet was held in the Murdock Room.  With a record attendance of 150 people, middle school students and their families enjoyed an evening of great food and fun, celebrating and honoring all 5th-8th grade boys and girls that participated on one of the many sports teams, which include soccer, basketball, swimming and track and field.  This year, CES had 100% participation by all 64 Middle School students throughout these 4 sports.

The event could not have been made possible without our dedicated Athletic Director and coach, Bryan Maust and coach Dave Lynch.  They organized a great night, recognizing and awarding the student's efforts and commitment to the CES sports program. As coaches, Mr. Maust and Mr. Lynch lead our teams with positive energy and respect.  The 8th grade class presented Mr. Maust with a Smart Sensor Basketball and Mr. Lynch with a ping pong table set, with each student taking the mic to honor their coaches with a few words of much-deserved praise.

We would also like to thank Andrea Poole, of Dinner Done and Delivered who provided the catering.  Polly Mitchell, Bryan Maust and Dave Lynch who decorated the room in CES style.  Kathy Smeltzer, Colleen Fahrner, Gaye Maust, Janet Gerber, and Natalie Hazelwood who helped with set-up, serving AND clean-up, and the Parents Association for getting all the volunteers coordinated, providing the drinks and dessert.  And, Woodmoor Pastry Shop for making the amazing red and white, sports-themed cupcakes!

Barnes & Noble Book Fair

It will be rainy and chilly again on Friday so why not go shopping at Barnes & Noble in Rio/Washingtonian Center, Gaithersburg? From 3:30 - 7:00 pm, Barnes & Noble will host our Spring Book Fair!  Copies of K-4th grade summer required reading will be available for purchase.  And, 5th-8th grade recommended reading will also be available. At 3:45 pm, lower-school students will put on a show so please come out to cheer them on!  And, anything you purchase will support our wonderful CES library. Just mention CES and the code:
11858164 at checkout.  Light refreshments will be served.

Also, you can shop online at www.bn.com/bookfairs from 5/6 to 5/11.  Please see the flyer for all the details!

The CES library benefits from EVERY sale so please mention "CES" at the cash register!   Every single sale will directly help to fund our special CES library!

  Parents Association

The next Parents Association "meeting" will be held on Wednesday, May 11 at 5:30 pm at Finnegan's Wake, in Rockville Town Center.  Everyone on the PA team is encouraged to attend and if you're interested in getting involved next year, please come by! Let's celebrate another great year for the PA at CES!

2nd Grade ERB Testing Coming Up Next Week

The Online CTP (ERB) is coming up next week. The Comprehensive Testing Program is an online standardized test CES uses in grades 2-8 to collect basic information about student achievement in key areas: reading, vocabulary, writing, and mathematics.
The 2nd grade will be testing on 3 days... May 9th, May 11th and May 12th starting at 9:45am. While we approach these tests in a low-key manner, we do ask families to be sure their child is well rested, has had a nutritious breakfast and is relaxed and ready to go on the mornings of the testing.  It is your children's schooling to-date that prepares them for this testing so there is no studying that needs to be done.
Please contact Trina Gandal in the Learning Resource Center 301-424-6550 or email her at [email protected]  if you have any questions.

  Boxing

Our 4th-8th graders just completed their 10 session boxing unit at Title Boxing in Rockville, Maryland.  We learned various punches such as upper cuts, jabs, crosses, and slips.  The students did a great job with the vigorous workout and we are looking forward to returning next year!

 2016-2017 School Supplies Pre-Order Program
Orders can be placed now through May 27

Did you know you can pre-order 2016-2017 school supplies NOW and have them waiting for your child in the classroom on the first day of school?!

The CES Parents Association again offers parents the pre-order opportunity.  Today through Friday, May 27, go to www.shopttkits.com, using CES school code 23676.  Once on the CES page, select your child's 2016-2017 grade level to order the appropriate supplies.

Note:  All parents of 7th graders should also order the 7th Grade Calculator (for use in 7th and 8th grades).  Any 8th graders not having the calculator should also order one.

Items offered for sale on the CES page below the grade-specific school supplies and the calculator are optional items for families to consider if interested.  They are not required school supplies.

School supply lists will be provided in the students' summer work packets for families who wish to shop themselves for school supplies.

Our Parents Association receives 10% of the total value of our school supply order.  Remember to complete your order by Friday, May 27. If you have any questions, please email Kristen Ward at [email protected].

 Student Spotlight

Ivana has been collecting loose trash every weekend with her family wherever they go. She brings along a trash bag for herself, and one for each of her family members.  Just last weekend, she returned to her old school neighborhood to help pick up trash.  Thank you, Ivana, for helping to keep our Earth clean!!

Take Your Child to Work Day

Ryan H. participated in take your child to work day last week.  BioReliance, part of Millipore Sigma, hosted 60 children ages 6-16 as a part of #sparkcuriosity to bring science to students. During take your child to work day, Ryan and the other participating students extracted DNA, made solutions glow, toured labs, and did experiments with candy.

Annual Fund Update
2015-2016
As we approach the 'home stretch' of the school year, the administration, faculty and staff at Christ Episcopal School would like to share our gratitude and thanks to all of you who have given so generously of your time, talent, and treasure to help us to raise monies for
the 2015 - 2016 CES Fund.

Our fundraising goal from the parent community is $175,000. To date we have raised $112,000,  compared  to  $140,000  at this  time  last year. Reaching $175,000 is one goal; another goal is 100% parent participation. As the Class Giving percentage box below illustrates, current parent giving has dropped significantly since last year. We would ask all of you to please encourage your fellow parents to support this fund which bridges the gap between tuition raised and the actual cost of a CES education.

If you have not yet donated, please participate today. You may drop off a check with Cailen at the front office, or donate via this link, http://cesrockville.org/donate, today. To see how else you can give, please visit http://cesrockville.org/how-to-give.
