A Message from the Head of School

Dear CES Families,

This past Sunday I enjoyed a really fun day as a CES exhibitor at the Rockville Science Day held at Montgomery College.  Organized by the Rockville Consortium for Science, Inc., this was Rockville's 25th anniversary for the event.  It was sponsored by Rockville Science Center, City of Rockville and Montgomery College.  I had never attended before and was quite impressed with the company I shared!  There were over 90 exhibitors.

Of course, I wanted to do something that allowed young children to participate in an activity and experience science in action.  So, with the help of the CES science teachers, I came up with the idea of doing chromatography using filter paper, water and magic markers.  Chromatography is a process that scientists use when they are given a mixture and they have to determine each of the unique ingredients.  Using filter paper (Safeway-brand coffee filters) and water, each young scientist had to determine whether or not the ink in the marker was a mixture of different inks.  They discovered that the yellow ink only had yellow ink in it, but that the green marker had some blue and yellow.  One of the surprises was the blue ink.  Several of the visiting scientists guessed that the blue would NOT be a mixture of inks; however, upon testing, they discovered that the ink in the markers I provided had a small bit of pink ink mixed in.  Everyone's favorite was the black ink which showed a mixture of a wide variety of colors.

I have to say, I had a wonderful time working with all of the children who stopped by.  Some of my favorite visiting scientists were Katie B. (CES '18), who also brought two of her cousins, and Charlotte C. (CES '22).  This was a fabulous family event that I hope many of you will take advantage of next year.

Also, please join us for our Service Day this Saturday, April 12 from 8:00am-3:00pm.  We'll be working in the Children's Garden next to the Jefferson Building, as well as, the other garden beds around campus.  It is supposed to be a gorgeous day.  Come and enjoy the sunshine and camaraderie with your Cardinal friends!

With love and gratitude,

Caroline Chapin, Ed.D.

Important Announcements

Good luck next week to the 5th and 6th grade at the season's first track meet.

If Your Child is Late to School - After signing your child in at the school office and receiving his/her "Admit to Class" slip, walk your child up to chapel.  Do not stop at the door of the Church Building and leave them unescorted to walk through the Church Building halls to chapel.

It's never easy saying goodbye, but over the next several weeks, our graduates will be reflecting on their time at CES as they look forward to new adventures in high school.

Catherine F., Class of 2014

My time at CES started when I came in kindergarten. Coming to CES I found my second family.  Igrew so close to everyone in my class I can't even think about not sitting in the same math class every morning for the next four years. Though I know I won't see everyone every day, I know that I will always keep in touch with them.  CES is not just a school; CES helps you grow into who you want to be. If it weren't for CES, I would not be who I am today.

Next year I will be walking new halls with new people at The Academy of the Holy Cross.  The reason I chose Holy Cross was because they offer so much for me. I tried out for the performing arts scholarship and thankfully I got it!  Just knowing I can have a great experience in what I love brought me even closer to the decision of choosing Holy Cross. When I shadowed at Holy Cross I felt like that was the place for me. All of the girls were kind and welcoming and the teachers were amazing! Holy Cross reminds me of CES with all of the amazing teachers and kids. I knew that going to Holy Cross I would make another family just like I did when I came to CES.  I am making my time last at CES until the day I graduate.

THIS SATURDAY!

Have a great time golfing AND support Christ Episcopal School's Diversity Outreach Scholarship!  Much like other area independent schools, CES relies on the generosity of our community to sustain and advance its mission. Proceeds from our golf outing directly benefit the CES Diversity Outreach Scholarship, a need-based scholarship awarded to an academically qualified student whose race, ethnicity, or national origin comprises a significant part of the Rockville community, but is underrepresented in our school.  This scholarship provides a valuable opportunity to the recipient and enhances the education of all our Christ Episcopal School students.  Don't wait; register today at http://cesrockville.org/golf.  For additional information please call Bob Treseler at 301-538-2046, or write to him at btreseler@CESRockville.org.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Nila A. & Hadley B., CES '22

Kindergarten friends Nila A. and Hadley B. had fun at Girls Day Out and Tea for Two at the American Girl Fashion Show at the Sheraton Pentagon City Hotel over Spring Break.

Held across the country as benefits for important local needs, the American Girl Fashion Shows are fun-filled events for girls and their families, friends, and favorite dolls! They are a wonderful setting to celebrate being a girl, whether yesterday or today, through a colorful presentation of historical and contemporary fashions.

Nila and Hadley enjoyed elegant refreshments, brought a favorite doll and learned how clothing has changed over the years to reflect history, culture and girls' individual styles.
