A Message from the Head of School
Dear CES Parents:
This week, two exciting on-campus events will broaden our community. Tonight, I look very forward to attending the New Family Reception. CES Buddy Families and administrators will welcome new CES families with a lovely catered dinner---but more importantly with the open arms and warmth that are so characteristic of CES. Our wonderful new families will become more familiar with the school, and we will get to know them not as applicants, but as as new members of our community.
Saturday's Truck Touch, open to the wider community is guaranteed to be a thrill! Vehicles "of all makes and models" serving all kinds of purposes will enthrall children and parents. This will be a true "hands on," "up close and personal" opportunity to experience what children only see whizzing by, at a distance or in a book. There will be face painting and food as well---please join me for the fun on Saturday, 10am-1pm!
With love and gratitude,
Caroline Chapin, Ed.D.

Here it is! 2013-2014 School Supply Order Opportunity
The Parents Association will have all of your child's school supplies waiting in his/her classroom on the first day of school in September! Click on CES SchoolKidz Program for order information, and select your child's grade for next year. It's an extremely easy online process, with about 3 weeks remaining to order before the firm deadline of Monday, June 3. This is an extremely popular service...thanks, PA!!
Notes: All students in grades 6-8 order the same supplies, with the exception of 7th and 8th graders that need a TI-84 Plus Graphing Calculator with USB port. (Rising 8th graders should already have the calculator.)
Also, you'll see that SchoolKidz also offers backpacks, water bottles, etc. in addition to our CES school supplies.

Class of 2016 Sails Aboard Lady Maryland
On the recent Lady Maryland field trip, the fifth grade students learned about the science, history, and economics of the Chesapeake Bay while aboard a historic pungy schooner workboat. The students were involved in many hands-on activities, including raising sail, charting Lady Maryland's course, testing the waters with modern scientific equipment, towing for plankton and examining it under a microscope, trawling for marine life, and observing first hand the factories, shipping ports, and local historic sites along the Patapsco River.
We are privileged to have the USA's largest estuary, The Chesapeake Bay, very close by. As we live in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, we feel it is important for our students to have a good knowledge base about this special ecosystem. The Lady Maryland educational program is designed, in part, to help the citizens of Maryland learn more about the Chesapeake Bay in order to help promote protection of the environment.
You can see in the Cardinal header photos above, it was a very memorable day for all of the fifth graders!

Student Spotlight
Andrew D. '15, was one of thousands of students from over 120 countries who participated in the Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth (CTY) Talent Search. In the process, academically talented 2nd-8th grade students undergo rigorous, above grade level testing. Because of the difficulty of the tests, only 25 to 30 percent of participants earned an invitation to one of the CTY Awards Ceremonies, held at several sites, where they are individually honored for their academic performance and potential. Andrew was one of 28 Maryland students awarded "high honors" for his performance in the area of spatial ability.
At last Saturday's awards ceremony at Johns Hopkins University, the executive director of CTY said, "Today we face critical global problems that require the best minds of the future to solve, using discipline, creativity, and innovation. It's inspiring and reassuring to see this group of some of the best and brightest students emerging and to know that they will become tomorrow's thought leaders and innovators."
