A Message from the Head of School

Dear CES Parents:

Two fabulous community building events have taken place in the past few days.  Both brought families and friends of the school together for great fun as well as fundraising for two important causes.

Friday evening was the First Annual Episcopal Schools Softball Classic at Grace Episcopal Day School, where families enjoyed a barbecue followed by a spirited softball game between the parents of both schools.  It was such a great time for entire families!!  Special thanks to Yvette Rose, PA President, and her volunteers and to our student cheerleaders.  Over $500 was raised for the Bishop Walker School, an Episcopal School in SE Washington, DC for boys of low income families, where the tuition for each student is fully funded by private contributions and Episcopal Diocese of Washington funds.  I hope the Softball Classic becomes an ongoing annual tradition and that the number of families participating grows every year.

Yesterday, despite the rain, a very successful 17th Annual CES Golf Classic was held at the gorgeous and challenging Whiskey Creek Golf Club in Ijamsville, MD.  With gross proceeds over $29,000, an enormous boost was made to the CES Diversity Outreach Scholarship Fund.  The rain affected attendance only slightly, and everyone had a fantastic time.  Thank you to our Diversity Committee for their help in organizing the event and to the eager players and our generous sponsors.

On both of these recent occasions, I was reminded of the closeness of this wonderful school community and the great fun we have together, as well as our constant heartfelt commitment to serving others---in these two instances through educational funding.  Thank you all!

With love and gratitude,
Caroline Chapin, Ed.D.

Grades 3 and 4 Standardized Testing - ERB testing will be administered to grades 3 and 4 in the mornings next Monday, May 13-Thursday, May 16.  Your child should have a good night's sleep and a good breakfast before each testing session.

Truck Touch Flier - Be on the look out for the Truck Touch Flier that was sent home today in your student's pack back.  If you already have it on your calendar, please pass it along to friends or family.  This is not just a CES event; everyone is invited!!!

Here it is!  2013-2014 School Supply Order Opportunity
The Parents Association will again have all of your child's school supplies waiting in his/her classroom on the first day of school in September!  Click on CES SchoolKidz Program for order information, and select your child's grade for next year.  It's an extremely easy online process, and we're starting now to allow our families plenty of time to order before the firm deadline of Monday, June 3.  This is an extremely popular service...thanks, PA!!

Notes:  All students in grades 6-8 order the same supplies, with the exception of 7th and 8th graders that need a TI-84 Plus Graphing Calculator with USB port.  (Rising 8th graders should already have the calculator.)

Also, you'll see that SchoolKidz also offers backpacks, water bottles, etc. in addition to our CES school supplies.

Class of 2013 Reflections

The Cardinal continues its weekly feature of one of the members of our graduating Class of 2013.  In their own words, our 8th graders share special recollections and/or appreciations of CES.  This week, Gavin W., who will attend The Avalon School next year, is featured.

I started my first days of CES in the 3's program with Mrs. Morella and I'm now spending my last days at this school with Ms. Iaquinta, Ms. Stotz, Sra. Bou, Mr. Maust, Mrs. Mitchell, and Mrs. Whitely. Each and every teacher I have had over the eleven years I've spent at CES has guided me through my educational path in their own unique ways.

My school has become like a second home. My classmates have become my brothers and sisters, gavin we laugh, play, and fight. Our teachers are like parents who keep us in line and have made us the students we are now. I plan to take the knowledge and morals I have learned at CES into the next adventure of my life at The Avalon School. CES has given me all the tools I could possibly need to overcome any challenge I may be confronted with in my school life. I can only hope that the bonds I make with the people in high school will be as strong as the ones I have with my friends at CES. It will certainly be shocking to walk into the first day of high school and know that I won't be greeted by the faces of the people I have spent almost every day of my life with since preschool. I will treasure the precious memories of CES and proudly represent CES in high school and after.

Seeking CES Student Ambassadors for 2013-14
Confident, outgoing and spirited students who are interested in applying for the Student Ambassador Program may due so until this Friday, May 10.  For a full description of the program and application, click here.

MUSIC NOTES
If you have not yet ordered your " Adventures in Oz" DVD ( professionally recorded by "Holl of Fame Video"), please do so by Monday, May 13.  Mrs. Whiteley has asked Mr. Holl for a quick turnaround, and he has already finished editing.  As soon as she gives him the final count, he will send the order to CES.

Please make your check payable to CES for $10.00 for each DVD. If you miss the deadline, you may order directly from Mr. Holl for a cost of $20.00 per DVD plus shipping costs.  Mrs. Whiteley will give you his contact information if you need it.  Mr. Holl and his assistant arrived at 3:30pm to set up their equipment in the balcony and check microphones. They were absolutely fastidious in their set up, and Mrs. Whiteley feels sure  you will be pleased with the quality of the DVD.

Chapel Offerings Dedicated to Endangered Species
tiger
In chapel, fifth graders are presenting reports on vulnerable, endangered and critically endangered species which the World Wildlife Fund supports, as each species' protection enriches life for other creatures in the same region and strengthens an entire landscape or marine area. Focusing on 13 species, our students vote to prioritize their support within groups of animals, culminating in a final vote in mid-May. At this point, after all reports are concluded, students will select one or two animals to which we will symbolically direct our support.

Beginning in February, our weekly chapel offerings have been dedicated to support the endangered animal or animals chosen in mid-May by our students.  As of today, our offering total is $96.38.
We will continue this dedicated offering for the next three Tuesdays, May 14, 21 and 28.  We collect an offering every Tuesday as a regular practice of our faith as God's people gathered in worship: dedicating part of our financial resources to ministry in the world.

The proceeds from our March and April Cardinal Casual Dress collections of children's used books and their re-sale coming soon will support our endangered animal/s as well.  Watch for sale details.
