MAESA Fair Participation
On a spectacular spring day last Friday, twenty representatives of our grades 4-8 traveled to the grounds of Washington National Cathedral to compete in the annual MAESA (Mid Atlantic Episcopal Schools Association) Fair at St. Albans School.   Each student competed against students from eleven local Episcopal Schools in either Art, Geography, Multi-Media, Science or Spelling after qualifying for entry based on prior project work or performance at CES .  Our CES competitors represented CES extremely well.  We even had a medal winner...see Student Spotlight below!

A Message from the Head of School

Dear CES Parents:

I hope everyone is getting excited about the big Christ Episcopal School vs. Grace Episcopal Day School (GEDS) softball game scheduled for Friday night!  Malcolm Lester, Head of School at Grace, and the GEDS P.A., along with our own Trevor Waddington, Yvette Rose, and Jason Twining have been having a great time planning it.  A contingent from The Bishop Walker School, along with The Rev. Claudia Tielking, Executive Director of the Mid-Atlantic Episcopal Schools Association (MAESA), will be there to cheer us on.

So far, we have a nice CES team shaping up, but we can always use more players.  Fr. McDuffie is coming and is ready to show us what he's got!  I told Trevor that I would pose as a danger on the field or up at bat (my injury or someone else's would be sure to ensue), so I'll be there ready to cheer, jump up and down, and generally make a spectacle of myself.

If you haven't done so already, respond to the RSVP to let us know you're coming.  GEDS is providing dinner which starts at 5:30.  The first pitch will be thrown at 6:00.  Come on, Cardinals!  Let's show Grace Episcopal and The Bishop Walker School what we've got....red and white spirit!!!!

Go Cardinals!!!

With love and gratitude,
Caroline Chapin, Ed.D.

Important Announcements

5th & 6th Grades ERB Testing - Students in these grades will have standardized testing next week.  Be sure they have a good night's sleep and a good breakfast each day before testing.

Buddy Families Wanted - I'm sure you all remember the first days as a new family at CES.  For those of you who were coming in not knowing anyone, it may have been tough.

To help introduce new families to CES, we are looking for current families to help welcome incoming families to CES.  The goal is to pair each new K-8 a family with a current family going into or having just completed the same grade.

We are also looking for 3-5 current or former preschool families to do the same for incoming preschool families.  Buddy families provide an invaluable resource and help make new ones feel more a part of our close community.

To become a buddy family, please contact Trevor Waddington at 301-424-8702 or twaddington@CESrockville.org.

Friday's Cardinal Casual Dress Day
Pennies for Porridge
For Mpambara-Cox Foundation
This Friday, May 3 is our last Cardinal Casual Dress Day of the school year.

Children are invited to bring in pennies (or any coins, bills or checks) as their ticket for casual dress this Friday.  Pennies for Porridge is the school feeding program in Uganda which provides a bowl of porridge daily to students for whom this is often the only meal of the day.  Please help us support this wonderful program.

Class of 2013 Reflections

The Cardinal continues its weekly feature of one of the members of our graduating Class of 2013.  In their own words, our 8th graders share special recollections and/or appreciations of CES.  This week, Kamran T., who will attend Glenelg Country School next year, is featured.

kamran t. Having been at CES for 11 years, I have made great friends, have great memories, and have been academically challenged. Starting from preschool 3s to eighth grade, I have always been challenged to do my best. Most of my class has been together since preschool. I will miss them when I leave for high school and I know we will keep in touch.

I feel like I am very prepared for high school, due to CES' strong academics. From the strong Spanish program to the fun Civics class, I have learned so much. I love that I have been able to take Spanish class from an early age and I really enjoyed the mock election we did in Civics class this year. All the teachers do a great job in having everyone participate. This, along with the small class size, has helped me grow as a student.

Being a chapel partner is something I have enjoyed very much. I especially like having Kindergarten chapel partners. I will be able to enjoy being with younger students again, as I will be attending Glenelg Country School in the fall.

Not only has CES been my second home, but I have always felt very welcomed. I would like CES to know that I will never forget the memories I have made and I thank you for preparing me for high school as well as you did.

Thank you,

Kamran Tareen

This Sunday - Jazz Vespers at Christ Church
jazz vespers
Please join us for a special Jazz Vespers on Sunday, May 5, from 5:00-6:30pm at Christ Church.  The Rev. John S. McDuffie on tenor sax leads a quartet of great Washington musicians, who will also welcome special guest vocalist Myrna Clayton, from Atlanta, Georgia.  You'll hear jazz standards played to accompany the liturgy of evening prayer.

A reception follows the service.  Admission is free, but  a suggested donation of $20 is welcomed. The event will support the ministry of the Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys in Southeast Washington.  We will be raising money for school uniforms, social support for school families, and school breakfasts for a year. Come enjoy the soulful sounds of jazz while supporting a great Episcopal School!

Student Spotlight
kk
KK M. '13 was awarded 3rd place in last Friday's MAESA Fair competition at St. Albans School for her gorgeous oil pastel rendering of a giraffe.

Mrs. Mitchell, Art Teacher, worked with this year's 8th graders on animal studies, through which students enlarged animals using a grid study from a photograph, then colored and blended with oil pastel.

Have you checked Mrs. Mitchell's CES Art Blog recently?  Enjoy glimpses of the rich visual arts program happening in the CES Art Studio and on arts related field trips.
