Wine Quotes

"Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing."
-- Ernest Hemingway

What IS that Smell in my Wine?

On Wednesday evening, May 27, about 50 people met at the Petaluma Women's Club to taste some horrible wine -- and had fun doing it! David Sandri (wine judge, instructor at the College of Marin and Sonoma State University, and Board member of the Petaluma Gap Winegrowers Alliance) taught a seminar on Wine Faults and Flaws -- how to identify the defect, and how and when the problem occurred. Is it cork taint? Sulfides or mercaptans? Oxidation? Volatile acidity? Brettanomyces?

David poured wines with all these nasty defects so we wine consumers could smell (gasp!) and taste (yuck!), learning to recognize these unpleasant characteristics and understand what went wrong in the winery, in the vineyard, or sometimes in the bottle. Also discussed were the "cork vs. screw cap" debate, the use of sulfites to preserve wine (Fact: very few people are actually allergic to sulfites), proper wine storage, and the effect of UV light on wine (don't buy that bottle sitting in a store window).

For a chance to learn all the above and more, click HERE to check out David's upcoming classes at the College of Marin.

Sunset and Moonrise Picnic July 30th

Come and enjoy a beautiful Sunset and the rise of an (almost) Blue Moon on Thursday, July 30th from 7:00pm to 9:30pm at the lovely Enriquez Estate Winery located at 3062 Old Adobe Road, Petaluma. Please bring an appetizer to share (or your own picnic), a picnic blanket, beach chairs and a wine glass. Your hostess, Cecilia Enriquez, will have wine flights available for your enjoyment at $10 pp. If a bottle of wine is purchased, the charge for the flight will be waived. You are welcome to purchase wine by the glass as well. Don't forget to dress in layers as we know the evenings in the Gap can get chilly!

Please feel free to bring a guest and there is no charge for this event. However, please RSVP to Linda Corbett ([email protected]) so we will have an idea of the number of guests to expect. Thanks and hope to see you there!
