AVA Petition Update

As announced in last month's Newsletter, the PGWA has submitted a petition to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade bureau (TTB) for recognition as an American Viticultural Area (AVA). We are pleased to announce that on March 4, 2015 our petition was deemed "complete" by the TTB and is now moving forward through the detailed review and evaluation process.

The next steps in the petition process are expected to be:

  • TTB detailed analysis
  • Proposed rulemaking
  • Public comment
  • Final rulemaking

The duration of the petition review process depends on many factors, and can take as little as a year to complete or as long as several years. The PGWA website AVA page will be updated throughout the process as more information becomes available. The page currently has a downloadable map of the proposed AVA boundaries.

Trombetta Family Wines
Erica Stancliff has been promoted to Winemaker for Trombetta Family Wines. Erica is the daughter of Rickey Trombetta and Roger Stancliff, proprietors. She graduated in 2010 from Fresno State University with her degree in enology. After graduation she worked in Mendoza, Argentina at Vina Cobos, then at Rudd. She was the enologist at Enartis Vinquiry for two years and recently worked at CrossBarn Winery in Sebastopol.

Trombetta's 2012 Gap's Crown Pinot Noir was recently included on the list of top-scoring wines in Wine Enthusiast article titled "America's Best Pinot Noirs." http://www.winemag.com/Web-2013/Americas-Best-Pinot-Noirs/

Guarachi Family Wines

Guarachi Family Wines 2013 Sun Chase Pinot Noir received 94 points from Wine Enthusiast! This is Guarachi's first vintage of single vineyard Sun Chase Pinot.

"The producer has chosen to highlight the Petaluma Gap region within the larger Sonoma Coast appellation on this wine, a nod to its recent purchase of the well-regarded Sun Chase Vineyard as well as an endorsement of the Gap becoming an appellation of its own one day. This Pinot might help matters, a beautifully floral mix of rose petal and violet on the nose followed intricately by juicy, subtle red fruit and buoyant acidity." http://buyingguide.winemag.com/catalog/guarachi-family-2013-sun-chase-vineyard-petaluma-gap-pinot-noir-sonoma-coast
