TRUE LOVE

A woman was sipping on a glass of wine with her husband and she says, "I love you so much. I don't know how I could ever live without you."

Her husband asks, "Is that you or the wine talking?"

She replies,
"It's me... talking to the wine."

July Educational Tour

The July educational event is a ranch tour and cheese tasting with Petaluma Gap wine pairing at the Achadinha Cheese Company on Saturday, July 26th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The Achadinha (Osh-a-deen-a) Cheese Company is a family run adventure with Jim and Donna Pacheco leading the whey. With the help of their 4 children and a team of enthusiastic cheese lovers they carry on a family tradition that began in the 1950s with Jim's parents. Discover what makes their cheese special and why they are so proud to bring it directly from the ranch to you. The tour will start inside the cheese plant talking about the most important things such as equipment, milk and what the girls are fed that make our cheeses special. Then to the milking parlor to see how they are milked. Off to the girls themselves, to see the breeding along with their strong personalities. Finally to the tasting of all of their cheeses along with some Petaluma Gap wines!

Date and Location: The tour will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the Achadinha Cheese Company, 750 Chileno Valley Road, Petaluma, CA.

RSVPs and Cost: Tour size is limited to 35 attendees. The tour cost is $20 for current PGWA members and $25 for non-members. PGWA members ONLY may RSVP through Friday, July 18th by sending an email to Cecilia Enriquez at Cecilia@enriquezwines.com. After July 18th, non-members may also RSVP.
Gophers Beware!

In many Gap vineyards you'll see large nest boxes mounted on poles high above the vines. These are barn owl boxes, inviting these useful birds to take up residency. If you happen to be near one of these boxes at night in late spring/early summer, you'll likely hear blood-curdling shrieks as the owlets (4 to 6 in one "clutch") ask mom and dad for dinner. Favorite barn-owl meal: gophers. Each owlet requires at least two gophers a day to fuel their rapid growth, with mom and dad downing one each. You do the math -- it is a highly effective way to control gophers without using poisons that may kill other creatures and leave residues in the soil. Left unchecked gophers can severely damage a vineyard, with their voracious subterranean munching resulting in weakened or dead vines. Barn owls are very effective at gopher control -- the owls hunt by sonar in total darkness, locating the rodent with clicking sounds, then silently sweeping in for the kill.

Few natural nesting sites remain for these beautiful white and tan owls as trees are cut down and urban life encroaches on their habitat. But even in suburbia a simple nest box, well sited, will convince them to move in. A good source of well-made boxes: Wild Wing Company here in Sonoma County (wildwingco.com). One animal keeping another in check -- it's biodiversity in action!
