Random Wine Facts
|
Bettino Ricasoli, founder of Brolio, is credited with having created the original recipe for Chianti, combining two red grapes (Sangiovese and Canaiolo) with two white grapes (Malvasia and Trebbiano). Today the better Chiantis have little or no white grapes in them and may contain some Cabernet. They are thus deeper in color and flavor and more age worthy.

Media Tasting of Petaluma Gap Wines
Three wine experts attended the most recent Petaluma Gap Winegrowers Alliance Targeted Media Tasting on October 2, 2013. The blind tasting was focused on the 2010 and 2011 vintages of Petaluma Gap chardonnays, pinot noirs, and syrahs. Twenty-nine wines were submitted by local wineries, and all of the wines were composed of 100% Petaluma Gap fruit.
"We are not in Carneros anymore," said Cyril Penn, Editor of Wine Business Monthly as he tasted the 2010 Petaluma Gap pinot noirs. "These wines have lots of spice, earthiness and nuance with the fruit in the background." Greg Walter, editor and publisher of the PinotReport, agreed. "These 2010 pinots are herb driven but with rich dark cherry and complex earth and spice notes." Virginie Boone, wine writer for the Press Democrat and contributing reviewer for Wine Enthusiast, concurred. "There is a lot of pepper and herbal components on these pinots. They are almost syrah like."
For a complete report from the media tasting, including a list of the 29 wines, please check it out on our website at www.petalumagap.com/blog.

Member News
Jason Lee Baker, Assistant Winemaker at Karah Estate Vineyard (aka, Windy Hill Estate Winery) reports that the 2013 crush has been wave after wave of grapes, with yield up by 57% over the previous year. Jason and his crew used every tank in the winery three times! The long, mild growing season with only a smattering of sprinkles resulted in ideal grape maturity at harvest. This year also saw grapes harvested in September, much earlier than usual. Jason and his crew managed to bring in 82 tons from 37 acres in a total of 26 days! Jason also reports that they are almost sold out of their Harvest Fair gold medal 2009 Karah Estate Pinot Noir. Tasting room hours are Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 5, or other days by appointment.
