Random Wine Facts
The process of primary fermentation, left uncontrolled, can happen very rapidly, especially in red wines. Winemakers typically want to slow down the process, to allow more flavors and, in the case of red wines, colors to be extracted. The typical red wine fermentation lasts less than a week. Whites are fermented longer, sometimes over a span of several weeks, to bring out more flavors and aromas.

Vineyard Happenings -- Harvest!

ER Pinot Noir
Freshly harvested Pinot Noir grapes head for the sorting table
"Can't complain!" Mike Pucci of Sangiacomo Vineyards said it for everyone. The harvest should be finished by next week, and yields have been average or above, weather's been ideal, quality is excellent. Gary Hendricks at Rockin' H did his first pick on August 24, and will finish with grenache and syrah the first week of October. The Sangiacomo vineyards are mostly picked, with some chardonnay still hanging (and their Roberts Road vineyard, a cold spot in the Gap, is always one of the last picked). The ˝ inch of rain on September 21 was worrisome, but the days following were windy and sunny which dried out the vines and clusters. Griffin's Lair did their last pick the night before it rained; other growers had the same idea -- tractor lights and head lamps were visible all along Lakeville Road! Water was a big concern this year, and most reservoirs are now pretty low. But, as Andrew Flocchini pointed out, the dry spring gave growers much better control over the vines (and smaller vines, with small clusters and berries, usually mean more intense wines). 2013 should be another outstanding vintage!
