Greetings Fellow Healer!
Welcome new and faithful readers! Over the summer I met many more of you, Amazing Healers! You are Clinicians, Supervisors, and Administrators. Thank you for joining us. Please read my message below and watch the video by my signature. The Sidebar has more resources for you and there's more info below my message re: services I am offering through Moonstone Center!
Fellow Healer,
When was the last time you spent time outside? I don't mean walked outside to get to your car or take the trash out or let the dog in or out. I mean when was the last time you spent time outside, sitting or walking, alone or with a friend or family member? Spent a significant amount of time, without a rush to get back to the office or run home to cook dinner or get dressed for work or some other To-Do on your list.
I live near the ocean. My husband and I are regularly thankful when we glimpse it as we drive by or pull over to just look at it, taking in its powerful beauty. But, I realized over Labor Day weekend that I had not been down to the beach to just sit, walk along the water's edge getting my feet wet, or take a swim the entire summer! HOW is that possible you may ask?!!! ~ Especially if you don't live by the ocean! ~ I understand the latter sentiment as I did not grow up by the sea. I fell in love with its energy and beauty on family vacations spending one week each summer on the Florida Gulf Coast. But I ask you, if you live by a park, when was the last time you just spent time there, had a picnic, lounged on a blanket and read a book looking up at the trees? If you have a back yard, when was the last time you just set out a chair and sat - or spent time in the swing you put in a year or so ago? Just sat and relaxed or moved about in the outdoors with no urgency. Reading, meditating, thinking about your incredible life, experiencing gratitude, feeling unfelt, unexpressed feelings of sadness or joy, or looking with awe at nature humming along around you?
The American Psychological Association's cover story this issue for the member magazine,
Monitor on Psychology, is
Therapy Gone Wild!
I personally loved the cover. It is a picture of psychologist Dr. Steve Debois looking up with abandon, his arms outstretched, palms upward in the setting of a grassy field, with trees and a hill sloping upward behind him. The cover is flush with beautiful and varied shades of green. And Dr. Dubois' posture and expression suggests freedom and surrender. The cover invites you outside. There are articles in the issue addressing the therapeutic power of being in the outdoors - based on several programs incorporating the environment, outdoor adventure and simply being in nature.
Our society and our business of healing others often keeps us indoors, sometimes for long stretches at a time. Those of us who are healers are often parents, spouses, partners, children of older adult parents, and good loyal friends to others. As I have said before, we often are in the profession we are in because of how we are wired genetically and the roles we played in our families of origin. It is very easy for us to get caught up running from one caring role to another. One vital way to replenish and restore is to take time and be outside in nature. Take the time, schedule it if you need to. Inhale and exhale. See the beauty God or Nature or Source (however you make sense of our fabulous grand order!) has created. Let the energy outside affect the energy that is you.
Peace and Gratitude,
And a Delicious taste of Autumn Sunshine and Fall Breezes to you Fellow Healer!

Another Note: September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. An important and vital topic for many of the patients, clients, students we treat and serve. Suicidal ideation, attempt, or completion is a symptom and issue whose very treatment can affect the mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and relational functioning of the individual providing treatment. Healers can experience trauma, secondary or vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, or burnout when treating individuals who are dealing with the severe, often violent, and sometimes lethal mind-body-spirit effects of suicide. Additionally, some treatment providers suffer with suicidality in their own lives or in the lives of their family members and friends. The Healer's personal life can be directly affected and need intervention based in this very area of being a Health or Mental Health Provider, Supervisor, Administrator, or Educator. Take time today to review your awareness and routine assessment of suicide in your patients, clients, or students. Take time today to assess if you need intervention for yourself re: this issue and its affect on you - i.e. clinical consultation or your own psychotherapy. You are amazing and wonderful. Take care of you as you take care of the precious others you serve!
