Opening Communion
As we have come out of a heavy Advent and Christmas season, Dr. Trina Armstrong will be preaching on how we as spiritual leaders find support and strength as we support others in this new year.
As we begin a new semester, let us come to the table together to be fed.

Thursday January 15
Tom Witt (United's Music Coordinator) will lead us in a prayer service for healing in different spheres of our lives: ourselves, the church, our nation, nations of the world, and creation.

From the Dean

Welcome to the New Term!

Welcome, Students!

We are pleased to welcome new and returning students to United's 2014-15 spring term! I Invite all students to access the Student Resources webpage on the main website and the Online Student Orientation course on Moodle for important information and tools to help you with your studies.

Welcome, Faculty!

Welcome to returning adjunct faculty: Katie Brink, Alika Galloway, John Gustav-Wrathall, Jody Reis Johnson, Russ Myers, David Rothstein, Jeanyne Slettom, Corrina Thomas and Jann Cather Weaver.

In addition to our regular teaching faculty, we are pleased to have four new adjunct faculty with us this term:
John Chang-Yee Lee, teaching Worship of the Church;
Ruth MacKenzie, teaching Worship Theory and Practice in the UUA;
Greg Meland, United's new Director of Spiritual and Vocational Development; and
Thomas Watson, teaching PC USA History and Polity.

Registering for The Spiritual Journey Program

Most Students in the M.Div. and M.A.R.L. Degree programs are required to take the Spiritual Journey Program course EL100. If you have not yet registered for this course or have questions about the requirement, please contact your faculty advisor or the registrar.

Check Out this Semester's Courses on Moodle

We hope you take the opportunity to "shop" other courses on Moodle over the next few days (see "Self-Enrollment," below). Faculty will have their syllabi posted online soon, giving students a chance to self-enroll into a course, review the syllabus and read through the course content. Moodle courses will be open for self-enrollment until the second class session.

We look forward to having students back on campus and at the downtown warehouse location, and wish you a successful spring term!

New for Spring Term 2015:

MOODLE SHOPPING and "Self-Enrollment"

Students are now responsible for adding themselves to their Moodle courses.

During the drop-add period (before the second class session), you can gain access to any spring course's Moodle page to see if you might want to add it or take it in the future.

Why this is awesome:

1.   No waiting! Add yourself to your classes beginning one week before classes start. You'll have instant access to courses you add during the drop-add period.

2.   You can "shop" for courses during the drop-add period, peruse sites, check out syllabi, etc.

Click here to access the flyer with the instructions for self-enrollment.

Please note that YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE TO ENROLL YOURSELF IN YOUR CLASS. All courses will be using Moodle and Moodle Grade Book this spring, so enrollment is necessary for course content and grading purposes.

At the end of the drop-add period, administrators will un-enroll you from any courses for which you are not registered.

The Intersection

 Psalms of Justice

A picture is worth a thousand words...

or just 17 syllables.

The art of haiku - 3 lines of 17 syllables - can speak volumes and effect change.  Change for the writer, change for the reader - enough writers and enough readers can effect global change.

This spring you are invited to participate in an ongoing writing project in The Intersection.  Inspired by images that focus on various aspects of social justice and human rights you will translate photographic images into your haiku, into your psalm of Justice. The images will rotate, some coming from visiting professor in Theatre and Culture Sarah Bellamy, artist-in-residence Wing Young Huie and Dr. Jann Cather Weaver. and others. The first issue we will focus on is the Civil Rights Movement.

Lunch and Learn

Haiku Workshop led by Cathy Kolwey
Tuesday, January 13, 2015 AND Friday, January 16, 2015
12:15-12:45

The Intersection

To help you get started Cathy Kolwey will be teaching workshops the first week of school.  Cathy participated in a year-long practice of writing a haiku every day and posting it on-line.  She will introduce the revealing practice of haiku and how transforming 5-7-5 can be.  Bring your lunch and join us in The Intersection or stop by on your own to participate in this ongoing and interactive arts practice.  Images will also be posted on United's Instragram and FB pages and where you can also participate.
