With the summer winding down, our hearts and minds turn toward syllabi and reading lists.  We are looking forward to your return and to the teaching and learning that gives us such joy.

Trading Places: New Locations for the Art Studio and the Computer Lab

We are pleased to announce that United's Art Studio has relocated. The studio, formerly in the Classroom Wing, is now on the lower level adjacent to the Context Caf. In this new setting the Art Studio is in the heart of the school and serves as a visible reminder of the central role of the arts in United's brand of theological education. The open space concept of the studio offers both beauty and an implicit invitation for all to participate in the creative process.

In this new location the integration of art and faith in process, product, and education is evident. Watch Monday Morning and Facebook for more opportunities to get involved.

The Computer Lab is now located in the classroom wing, where the Art Studio used to be. Check out the new space the next time you're on campus!

The Kaleo Center

Introducing the Kaleo Center for Faith, Justice and Social Transformation!

It's official: the Center for Public Ministry at United has taken a new name! We are now the Kaleo Center for Faith, Justice and Social Transformation (pronounced "Kalo"). This name change reflects a deepening sense of our identity, not a departure from our mission.

The name "Kaleo" expresses our self-understanding as a voice calling forth justice across faith communities. In ancient Greek, "kaleo," means "to call," "to invite," or "to summon."  In Hawaiian, "ka leo" means "the voice."

Kaleo Center seeks to call forth the best and deepest passions in persons of faith. We work to prepare and empower faithful leaders with the theological, strategic, analytical and practical skills needed to act powerfully for the common good. And we do this in partnership with allies in the wider community. We believe that justice requires deep, abiding relationships: who we stand with is as important as what we stand for.

Kaleo Center is launching not just a new name and a new look, but a constellation of new academic offerings. These will enable both masters' degree and Doctor of Ministry students to earn concentrations in Social Transformation. A new MA degree program is in development and pending approval, and Kaleo is exploring ways to deliver certificate programs to learners who are not seeking academic credit.

We hope you'll take some time to check out our website at

 www.kaleo.center.

Welcome, Arif Mamdani!

The Kaleo Center is pleased to announce the arrival of our newest staff member, Arif Mamdani, as a part-time associate director. Arif's work will focus primarily on technology, social media and community relations. Prior to joining the Kaleo Center, Arif served as the Executive Director of the Progressive Technology Project. Following his work at PTP, he served as the Executive Director of the Seasons Fund for Social Transformation. Most recently, Arif worked with TakeAction Minnesota as Director of Movement Building.

In addition to his professional experience, Arif has also served on philanthropic and grant making boards with the Headwaters Foundation for Justice and the Minneapolis Foundation. Arif is a member of First Universalist Church of Minneapolis and also serves on the board of the UU Church of the Larger Fellowship. Finally-he is matriculating as an M.Div. student at United beginning in September.

Welcome to United, Arif!

Student Employment at United

Student Positions Available

The Interfaith and Intercultural Initiative program is looking for some part-time student help. This could be one or two people depending on interest.

TR610 Theology of Religions: We are looking for a student to help with the TR610 Theology of Religions class. The class will be learning from Buddhist, Sikh, Muslim and Jewish communities. There are, however, many other communities in the area. With direction, the student will contact leaders of these various communities and complete a 30 minute video interview with each leader. The interviews will then be edited and become part of the Moodle resources for the class and for future classes. Some experience with video is recommended, but not necessary. This position can be done for hourly pay or for credit depending on the interest of the student and the scope of the work.

September 11 Dinner Event: We are hosting a dinner on September 11 for immigrant pastors of immigrant congregations. We hope to get at least 40 pastors to attend. We want to hear their concerns and hopes for their communities, and determine what role the seminary can play in supporting their ministries. An assistant is needed to help with community outreach to invite the pastors, and to help with logistics (name tags, registration, signage, etc.) of the actual dinner. The assistant should have at least 15 hours available the week of September 8, including the day and evening of September 11.

Please email Gail Anderson if you are interested in one or both of these positions.
