LOVE IN BLOOM AND COMING SPRING

Saturday, February 22,7:30 PM

Bigelow Chapel

New Chamber Arts Guild, a distinctive, new chamber ensemble of singers, joins with the exquisite playing of the Mill City String Quartet to present "Love in Bloom and Coming Spring." The program combines the madrigals of 17th century Venetian composer Claudio Monteverdi with new music by Arthur Clyde.

Composer and conductor Arthur Clyde has a rich and varied musical background including composition, conducting, teaching and editing. This performance combines choral voices with instruments in an intimate, chamber-sized performance space to celebrate a variety of musical styles, including the unusual work, "The Burpee Seed Catalogue Collection." In this work, each of the seed packet songs blossoms forth with its distinct rhythms, harmonies and instrumental styles, resulting in a musical bouquet guaranteed to delight the imagination.

Claudio Monteverdi, one of Italy's most famous composers, wrote passionately for both church and court. In this concert of madrigals of spring and love, the New Chamber Arts Guild combines voices with woodwinds and the Mill City String Quartet, as we hear the writing of Monteverdi recreated for our own time.

Cost: $15 - Tickets will be available beginning in mid-January, at the New Chamber Arts Guild website.

For tickets and more information, visit www.newchamberartsguild.org.

CINDI BETH JOHNSON AWARDED FELLOWSHIP FOR 2014

Congratulations to Dr. Cindi Beth Johnson, Director of Community Programming in the Arts, Religion, and Spirituality at United, who was awarded an Intermedia Arts' Creative Community Leadership Institute Fellowship in 2014. Intermedia Arts' leadership program, Creative Community Leadership Institute (CCLI, formerly ICCD), is one of a handful of programs in the country that provides comprehensive, professional-level training and support for local community-engaged artists and community developers.

CCLI Spring 2014 will bring together 25 local fellows for an intensive five-month journey of experiential learning, personal practice development, new cross-sector partnerships, creative tools, strategies and practices, a deeper understanding of the field, and an ongoing network of peers in the field. This training is part of a multi-year initiative to catalyze and connect a regional network of creative changemakers in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, and they engage the question: How do the arts and community development work together to contribute to capable and caring communities?

Congratulations, Dr. Johnson, and thank you for your commitment to this project and its vision for communities!

SUMMER SCHOOL ABROAD:

Reading the Bible in Amsterdam: Texts, Traditions and Interpretations

This course deals with the complex interrelationships between texts, traditions, and interpretations in the field of biblical studies. The topics addressed in the course range from issues related to textual criticism (what texts exist, how were they used, and how were they published?), to topics related to their transmission and translation, as well as the establishment of interpretative traditions, to questions related to philosophical and theological hermeneutics (what is the role of reading communities, how 'objective' is the interpretation of a text, etc.). By discussing these various aspects of biblical interpretation in the context of one course, an interdisciplinary view of biblical interpretation can be achieved that is otherwise hardly possible.

The professors in Biblical Studies of VU University Amsterdam combine their expertise to create this unique course. The setting of Amsterdam and VU gives an extra impetus to the questions at stake in the course: while VU University has strong ties with Christian theology, the postmodern and postsecular setting of Amsterdam, and the broad academic setting in which the Faculty of Theology of VU University is located provides a context that invites exploring new questions and going beyond disciplinary and theological boundaries. Tradition and innovation meet in new and exciting ways.
