NEWS FROM THE DEAN

Pastoral Care and Pastoral Theology Appointment
I am delighted to report that on the unanimous and enthusiastic recommendation of the search committee, the Academic Council voted - also unanimously and enthusiastically - to recommend that  Trina Armstrong be appointed Assistant Professor of Pastoral Care and Pastoral Theology at United beginning July 1. With the authorization of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board, the President has extended the offer, and Trina has accepted.

Trina Armstrong is completing her Ph.D. degree from Claremont School of Theology, and has an M.A. in Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy from California Southern University, and M.A. in Practical Theology, Spiritual Care and Counseling from Claremont School of Theology, the M.Div. degree from Fuller Theological Seminary, and a B.A. from Golden Gate University.  Her thesis title is Behind the Veil of the Village: a Womanist Pastoral Theological Analysis of Single African American Mothers, Cultural Trauma, Relational Trauma, and Relationship Education Programs. She has been serving as Community Educator at VITAS Innovative Hospice Care in Covina, CA while working on her dissertation, and also recently served as Teaching Associate for Spiritual Formation and Vocational Discernment at Claremont School of Theology.  She is an ordained Itinerant Elder with the African American Methodist Episcopal Church, and has been serving as Associate pastor at First AME Church in Pasadena. We eagerly anticipate her arrival at United.

I would like to recognize, and express appreciation to, the members of the search committee, who worked long and hard, and with great care and thoughtfulness, to bring us to this moment. Those persons are Heather Giffen, Malachi Mattox, Eleazar Fernandez, Barbara Holmes, Barbara Anne Keely, and Carolyn Pressler. Christie Neuger played an invaluable role as consultant to the committee. I would also like to recognize and express my gratitude to Deb Olsen for her excellent work in staffing the committee and coordinating the interviews.

I would like to thank all the other members of the community who helped in the process of interviewing, and providing hospitality for, the two candidates who came to campus. Your participation in the process was extremely important and helpful.

Martha Postlethwaite Promoted to Professor of Spiritual Formation
Please join me in celebrating the richly-deserved promotion of our Seminary Chaplain, Martha Postlethwaite, to Professor of Spiritual Formation.
Her contributions to the life and well-being of this community are innumerable and vital, as exemplified by her grace-full pastoral presence and actions.
Congratulations, Martha!

Thank you!

Heard the Rumors?

You may have caught wind that United is in the process of developing a new brand identity that is more in sync with the seminary's personality, ethos and mission, and makes us more visible in a competitive landscape. After a lot of work behind the scene, we'd like to hear feedback from the wider community about the options that have been developed. The proposed logos and tag line will be on display in the Context Café from Tuesday, May 14, at 10:00 AM through Thursday afternoon, May 16. Please stop by, have a look and let us know what you think. There will be feedback forms that you can fill out and drop in a box. We're looking forward to hearing from as many students, faculty and staff as possible during the week.

Starting TODAY - Monday, May 13:
...the Bigelow Chapel doors will be kept locked at all times except during public events or weddings. Please use the main entrance at 3000 Fifth St. N.W. While we have not had any incidents of unwanted entry, a recent security review of the seminary produced a recommendation to increase control of building access by keeping the isolated doors at Bigelow locked.

A Message from the Security Committee

Dear UTS Community Members,

SAFETY:  A word that is extremely broad in definition and in many cases not thought about until tragedy strikes.

Safety is a top priority and value at UTS. In response to this priority the UTS community has formed a Security Committee. This Committee has met a couple times and are looking into ways we can take a holistic view on safety at UTS. This includes: procedures for all kinds of emergencies, developing a Security Plan, consulting with the local Police and Fire Department on training exercises, researching effective practices, etc...

This will result in additions and changes to our current approach to safety on the UTS Campus.

ENTRANCES: In consulting with the New Brighton Police Departments Safety Specialist we learned how important entrances are as a point of potential vulnerability for those wishing to cause harm. Fewer main entrance points will improve our vulnerability. The following changes will be implemented for the overall safety and security at UTS:

  1. Bigelow Chapel Entrance. This entrance that is normally open will now be normally closed. It will be opened for special events, but on an everyday basis it will remain locked.
  2. McMillan Center. All exterior McMillan doors will be locked between 6 and 6:30 PM, Monday - Friday.

THIS DOES NOT EFFECT THE ABILITY TO EXIT!

MORE TO COME:  Trainings, Security Plan, Practice Drills, etc.

Thank you for your cooperation with these implementations. We look forward to continued improvement in Campus Safety. Any input is appreciated and will be taken under advisement.

Workshop Assistants Needed - June 11-14

An invitation to United students: As a student you can register for the annual Summer Institute in Spirituality and the Arts at the discounted rate of $75.00. Yet another way to receive a significant discount is to be a Workshop Assistant (WA). I have several slots available for WAs, who pay a $25 registration fee and any applicable supply fees. In turn, WAs assist their assigned instructor with room setup, making copies, helping with supplies, etc. WAs can then take part in the workshop. Most of the assisting happens during the workshop, but occasionally a WA may need to stay late or arrive early (15-30 minutes). If you are interested in being a Workshop Assistant, please contact Cindi Beth Johnson at cbjohnson@unitedseminary.edu.

The Legacy of Penumbra Theatre:

The Power of Art and Social Change

In the Bigelow Chapel

April 8 through June 25

We are honored to have Sarah Bellamy speak at Spring Convocation and lead a workshop in the Summer Institute this year. Bellamy is the Associate Artistic Director for Penumbra Theatre. She is passionate about the ability of art to provide educational outreach to the community, increasing awareness around social issues and celebrating difference.

To complement Bellamy's time with us, we will be displaying this exhibit curated by the Archie Givens, Sr. Collection of African American Literature, exploring the on-going work and prestigious history of Penumbra's contribution to the theatre arts, social justice, and wider Twin Cities community.

A Public Witness:

Rediscovering United's Permanent Collection

In the Classroom Gallery

Showcasing new gifts to United's Permanent Collection, this exhibit features works by a variety of artists working in a diversity of styles and themes addressing societal, religious and spiritual concerns. This exhibit is an excellent reminder of the many ways United's arts collection and programming inspire, encourage, and support our students, staff and faculty as they pursue their vocational ministries and engage the wider Twin Cities community in a vital cultural dialogue.
