communityCOMMUNITY NEWS

Dear beloved community of many friends,

A message from Meredythe Jones-Rossi
It was hard being severed from my bookstore. Buying books with professors, librarians, clergy, seminarians and lay people. And...vestments, candles, curriculum, fair trade gifts (Divine Chocolate) and Peace Coffee. I was happy and loved it all.

Here at home, I have to boil my own water for tea and cook my meals (ah! Chef Michelle you are missed.) But I am surrounded by the flowers and cards and great gifts - messages of your warm thoughts and generosity. It is filling my heart with good thoughts and delightful memories.

There is a magnetic quality at United. All the scholars, discerning and fulfilling their Callings - unforgettable, that's what you are. So I will see you again, because it would be awful to stay apart.

Deep thanks for your help with groceries and entertainment for Spring Break. I am filling my resume with the words you wrote and said to me. I am so grateful and encouraged.

Love and hugs,
Meredythe

STUDENT COMPUTER LAB MOVES!

CHECK OUT THE NEW HOT SPOT ...

Looking for a new place to relax

or study? Then visit the old Cokesbury Bookstore space,

the new home for the Student Computer Lab. Comfortable furniture and gallery space for art exhibits have transformed this area next door to the Context Café into a great place to hang-out with friends and colleagues.

The Spencer Library - home to the Student Computer Lab for many years - wishes the computers well in their new home and reminds everyone that you will no longer need to sign-up at the library circulation desk to use the computers. We do encourage you, however, to be mindful of your time using these common computers so that others may have equal access.

The Legacy of Penumbra Theatre:

The Power of Art and Social Change

In the Bigelow Chapel

April 8 through June 25

We are honored to have Sarah Bellamy speak at Spring Convocation and lead a workshop in the Summer Institute this year. Bellamy is the Associate Artistic Director for Penumbra Theatre. She is passionate about the ability of art to provide educational outreach to the community, increasing awareness around social issues and celebrating difference.

To complement Bellamy's time with us, we will be displaying this exhibit curated by the Archie Givens, Sr. Collection of African American Literature, exploring the on-going work and prestigious history of Penumbra's contribution to the theatre arts, social justice, and wider Twin Cities community.

A Public Witness:

Rediscovering United's Permanent Collection

In the Classroom Gallery

Showcasing new gifts to United's Permanent Collection, this exhibit features works by a variety of artists working in a diversity of styles and themes addressing societal, religious and spiritual concerns. This exhibit is an excellent reminder of the many ways United's arts collection and programming inspire, encourage, and support our students, staff and faculty as they pursue their vocational ministries and engage the wider Twin Cities community in a vital cultural dialogue.

Join us for the Installation!

April 17 - 9:30 AM

We will be meeting in the Classroom Gallery, and having lunch after! Please email Amanda at  ahunter@unitedseminary.edu with any questions!

Rethinking Evangelism: Faithful witness in a new apostolic era
July 22-24, 2013
Luther Seminary

What does it mean to give witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ in an increasingly diverse and pluralistic society? How can we "give an account for the hope that is within us ...  with all gentleness and reverence" (2 Peter 3:15-16), reclaiming evangelism as a central practice for Christians in daily life today? Read more and register.

Team Wheel Help

Team Wheel Help is riding again this year as part of our effort to beat Multiple Sclerosis (and to help find solutions for those already living with MS). We have several UTS students and friends living with MS and would like to invite any UTS students, faculty, staff, family, and friends to join us this summer for either the MS TRAM (week long ride from July 14-19 in northern Minnesota) or for the MS150 (weekend ride June 7-9 from Duluth to Minneapolis). They are great rides and are quite "doable" for most folks who bike a bit throughout the spring and summer months. I'd love to have UTS represented along the route!! There are camping and hotel/B & B options for overnight options - AND, if anyone has an RV or would like to join us without biking (and help set up camping or other arrangements, let us know).

If you're not into biking, though, or aren't able to join us for the ride--please consider donating to our efforts. We collect monetary donations, and appreciate every one! We also collect used cell phones and recycle them - last year, UTS students, staff, faculty, and friends helped us raise over $700 in recycled cell phone funds!!! Used phones can be donated anytime and placed in the box outside of Michelle Rodriguez's office in McMillan Center or in my UTS mailbox #172 anytime.

Contact Karen Evenson (Team Wheel Help captain) with questions or to register or donate: kevenson@unitedseminary.edu or 763.370.4245. Online registration/donation links with more info about the rides:
