     Dr. Barbara Holmes

Dr. B is the keynote speaker at the Spiritual Directors International conference
Thursday, April 11
, at 7:15 PM

Crowne Plaza St. Paul Riverfront Hotel
11 Kellogg Blvd. East, St. Paul MN 55101
The event is free and open to the public.

"The Dream-Keeping Women: Womanist Approaches to Spiritual Direction"

The Reverend Dr. Barbara A. Holmes will explore the mystical legacies of black women that are rarely spoken of but prevalent in the black family traditions. Dr. Holmes will explore her roots in Gullah culture and the women of her family who acted as shamans and mediators of mystery in everyday life. She will also discuss elements of womanism that inspired the contemplative activism of Fannie Lou Hamer and Rosa Parks.

Drawing from her books, Joy Unspeakable, Dreaming and Liberation and the Cosmos, and Dreaming, Dr. Holmes's presentation will include storytelling about the everyday lives of people who connect to one another and the spirit realm with equal ease and familiarity. Spiritual direction in this context includes the wisdom of those who exist in the life beyond life. Read more

FYI: Duke Addicks and Rabbi Amy Eilberg, current UTS DMin students, are presenters at the SDI conference. For more information about Spiritual Directors International, visit http://sdiworld.org/

Merit Scholarships

Students: please note the announcement about Merit Scholarships.

Attention UCC Students - an easy competition

We invite you to join with the members of Confessing Christ, a movement dedicated to promoting joyful theological reflection throughout the United Church of Christ, in celebrating the 450th anniversary of the publication of the Heidelberg Catechism. The influence of that document upon the development of the Reformed tradition in particular and Protestantism in general has been incalculable. It directly nurtured the faith of the German and Dutch branches of the Reformed family, and also helped shape the piety of the English-speaking Reformed traditions. In order to explore the legacy of this document and to envision the ways in which its theological riches can inform our future mission and witness, Confessing Christ is offering a $1,000.00 prize to an essay that critically and creatively probes the Heidelberg Catechism's continuing significance to the church.

Any seminarian who is a member of the United Church of Christ is eligible to submit an essay. The essay must illumine important themes in the Heidelberg Catechism and investigate their on-going relevance for our life together in the Body of Christ. The essay will be evaluated according to the accuracy of its historical and textual analysis, the plausibility of its theological argumentation, and the fruitfulness of its suggestions concerning the life and proclamation of the church. The essay should be 15-25 pages in length, and will be due on October 15, 2013. The title of the most excellent essay will be announced on November 15. The stylistic conventions of the Chicago Manual of Style should be followed.

The essays should be submitted electronically and in paper form to:

"Another Minnesota Family in the Neighborhood"

February-March

The work of Somali photographer and community activist Mohamed Barre provides a visual exploration and documentation of what it is like for Somali families to find home in Minnesota. His art features both stark changes and simple nuances in a profound and beautiful way. Barre's photography also depicts the changing landscape of Minnesota. Originally intended to preserve a history of the Somali community for the next generation, Barre's work also helps us understand the stories of home, transition, individuals, communities, and neighborhoods, and what it means to live in an increasingly diverse neighborhood.

Barre's photography will be on exhibition in the Bigelow Chapel and the Classroom Gallery in February and March. For exact times, please check our website. Gallery tours are available by contacting Amanda Hunter at [email protected]

The Middle Project - Preparing Ethical Leaders for a Just Society

Middle Collegiate Church, New York

2013 conference, April 13-16

Shifting demographics in our nation make it clear that our multiracial/multicultural future is now. Learning how to help congregations grow more diverse racially, economically, and culturally helps us rehearse God's vision of justice and peace. Middle Church is an example of how an emphasis on justice and working toward meaningful change are key to attracting those seeking authentic communities-the unaffiliated and young adults. Read more: http://www.middleproject.org/conference-2013
