Looking for CPE Opportunities?

Please visit the news forum on Moodle for recent postings. A local CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) supervisor and UTS alum states that United students generally apply late for CPE, often missing the best opportunities. If your degree program requires CPE, don't wait too long to apply!

South Africa - It will change your life!

(I just wanted to say a quick word to all of you before I go into "hiding" on sabbatical.)

YOU - Members of the UTS Community - are the ones I carried with me to South Africa, and I am so grateful for your prayers, as they sustained us for almost 3 weeks while we were there. Thank you for following our blog, and writing to us while we were traveling. Many, many thanks to all of you here!

The trip to South Africa for me was life changing. It is a country that is enormously complex and stunningly beautiful. HIV/AIDS is an epidemic there and the vestiges of apartheid are everywhere. If you go there, the people who are still working for social, political, and religious change, also will change you .....me....everyone and anyone who goes there with an open spirit and heart.

So publicly, I want to express my gratitude to each and every person we met in South Africa. I want to say how thankful I am to have spent precious time with so many religious leaders, prophetic artists and writers, teachers, social activists and the mothers and fathers of the township of Guguletu who opened up their homes and their lives to us for three incredible nights and days. Thank you to the people of South Africa, for such generous hospitality, and for changing our lives!

My colleague Kim Vrudny captured a moment  in our time there that I will treasure for the rest of my life:

May God's blessings be on Archbishop Desmund Tutu and all the people of South Africa who are working for change, who are working for true Justice!   Chris Smith

The work of Somali photographer and community activist Mohamed Barre provides a visual exploration and documentation of what it is like for Somali families to find home in Minnesota. His art features both stark changes and simple nuances in a profound and beautiful way. Barre's photography also depicts the changing landscape of Minnesota. Originally intended to preserve a history of the Somali community for the next generation, Barre's work also helps us understand the stories of home, transition, individuals, communities, and neighborhoods, and what it means to live in an increasingly diverse neighborhood.

Barre's photography will be on exhibition in the Bigelow Chapel and the Classroom Gallery in February and March. For exact times, please check our website. Gallery tours are available by contacting Amanda Hunter at [email protected]

ALUM NEWS

Doug Abbott, Artist*Theologian, (MA-LTRJ '10) announces the opening of SACERDOS at First Universalist, Feb 17 - March 24. Sacerdos draws from work he created during his graduate studies at United Theological Seminary, as well as new works. Doug writes "In 2005 when I embarked on a journey for deeper understanding of the spiritual dimensions of my own creative process. I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy the exhibit. You may contact me directly at [email protected] with questions, inquiries or deeper conversation. There will be two opening receptions on Sunday, March 3, 10:30-12:30 and 2:30-4:00. Please RSVP directly to [email protected] if you plan to attend the 2:30 reception." Drawing from words by Ori Z Soltes,  "Just as the sacer itself has various analogical aspects, so the sacerdos may be understood as a borders creature of various analogous aspects: a priest(ess), a prophet(ess), a hero(ine), a pharoh, shah, an emperor, a king, a poet, an ARTIST. All of these are inspiring connections with the sacer that the rest of us lack. It is the sacerdos who, as ARTIST(prophet), presents us with behavioral guidelines prescribed by God, through which we can achieve God's blessing."

Congratulations to Alison Bents (MARL '08), Administrative Assistant to the Conference Minister, who has had three of her photographs selected by the Twin Cities Photography Group for a special display called "9 Stops" (focused on the new St. Paul light rail corridor). A special opening reception was held last Friday evening, and the photos are available for viewing through February 23 at AZ Gallery and Tanpopo Noodle Shop, 308 Prince Street, Lowertown St. Paul. There is no admission fee. Though most of you know Alison as the "voice" of the Conference when you call our offices, or the friendly face and unflappable presence when you register for Annual Meeting, you may not know that she is an accomplished photographer. To learn more you can visit her website at: www.alisonbentsphotography.com.

Reconciliation Not Revenge

Local Muslim, Jewish and Christian Communities Come Together to Learn From Middle East Peace and Reconciliation Efforts

Two men - a Palestinian and an Israeli - are coming to the Twin Cities this March to share their stories of pain and hope. Like so many in the region, both men have lost close family members to the ongoing fighting. They also have an inspiring story to tell; they belong to a group called The Parents Circle - Families Forum which is working towards peace, reconciliation, and tolerance in their troubled homeland.

From March 1-3, Wajih Tmaiza of Hebron and Roi Golan of Tel Aviv will be speaking at events at the Islamic Center of Minnesota, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, and Mount Zion Temple. These three religious communities have collaborated on prior public dialogues in an effort to create a more nuanced, balanced, and informed understanding of the lived realities of Israelis and Palestinians. The upcoming events, called Reconciliation Not Revenge, represent a deepening of that dialogue. The events are free and open to the public. They are:

  • Friday, March 1, 7:30 PM, Mount Zion Temple, 1300 Summit, St. Paul. (All are welcome to join Sabbath Services at 6:30 PM)
  • Sunday, March 3, 9:30 AM, Gloria Dei Lutheran, 700 S. Snelling, St. Paul. (All are welcome to join services at 8:45 or 10:45 AM)
  • Sunday, March 3, 2 PM, Islamic Center of MN, 1401 Gardena NE, Fridley. (All are welcome to join a 1:30 PM prayer service. The 2 PM event includes viewing the film Two Sided Story, which features the work of The Parents Circle, with a Q&A to follow.)

The Middle Project - Preparing Ethical Leaders for a Just Society

Middle Collegiate Church, New York

2013 conference, April 13-16

Shifting demographics in our nation make it clear that our multiracial/multicultural future is now. Learning how to help congregations grow more diverse racially, economically, and culturally helps us rehearse God's vision of justice and peace. Middle Church is an example of how an emphasis on justice and working toward meaningful change are key to attracting those seeking authentic communities-the unaffiliated and young adults. Read more: http://www.middleproject.org/conference-2013
