The work of Somali photographer and community activist Mohamed Barre provides a visual exploration and documentation of what it is like for Somali families to find home in Minnesota. His art features both stark changes and simple nuances in a profound and beautiful way. Barre's photography also depicts the changing landscape of Minnesota. Originally intended to preserve a history of the Somali community for the next generation, Barre's work also helps us understand the stories of home, transition, individuals, communities, and neighborhoods, and what it means to live in an increasingly diverse neighborhood.

Barre's photography will be on exhibition in the Bigelow Chapel and the Classroom Gallery in February and March. For exact times, please check our website. Gallery tours are available by contacting Amanda Hunter at [email protected]

From Enemy to Friend :
Jewish Reflections on Everyday Peacemaking

Lecture by Rabbi Amy Eilberg

Tuesday, February 12, 7:30 PM.
Woulfe Alumni Hall North (378A), Anderson Student Center
University of St. Thomas, St. Paul Campus

Why does conflict arise among individuals and among religious, political and ethnic groups? What contributes to the resolution, even transformation, of conflict in the world and in our lives? How can each of us serve the cause of peace? Rabbi Eilberg will explore these questions through the lens of Judaism's rich body of sacred texts on peace and peacemaking.

In 1985 Rabbi Amy Eilberg became the first woman ordained as a rabbi in Judaism's Conservative Movement. Soon after that she found her vocation in the work of healing. A co-founder of the Bay Area Jewish Healing Center, where she directed the Jewish Hospice Care Program, and a founding co- director of the Yedidya Center for Jewish Spiritual Direction, she is nationally known as a leader of the Jewish healing movement and in the field of Jewish spiritual direction. From 2007 to 2011 Rabbi Eilberg served as coordinator of the Jay Phillips Center's Interfaith Conversations Project, fostering interfaith learning and friendship among Christians, Jews, and Muslims in the Twin Cities area. Currently she is the center's interfaith conversations special consultant, works with the Jewish Council on Public Affairs on its Civility Campaign, and serves on the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations. She is also deeply engaged in the work of peace and reconciliation, particularly in connection with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, lecturing and writing on this topic as well as on the art of compassionate listening, healing, and spiritual direction. Rabbi Eilberg is at work on a book titled From Enemy to Friend: The Sacred Practice of Jewish Peacemaking.

Reconciliation Not Revenge

Local Muslim, Jewish and Christian Communities Come Together to Learn From Middle East Peace and Reconciliation Efforts

Two men - a Palestinian and an Israeli - are coming to the Twin Cities this March to share their stories of pain and hope. Like so many in the region, both men have lost close family members to the ongoing fighting. They also have an inspiring story to tell; they belong to a group called The Parents Circle - Families Forum which is working towards peace, reconciliation, and tolerance in their troubled homeland.

From March 1-3, Wajih Tmaiza of Hebron and Roi Golan of Tel Aviv will be speaking at events at the Islamic Center of Minnesota, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, and Mount Zion Temple. These three religious communities have collaborated on prior public dialogues in an effort to create a more nuanced, balanced, and informed understanding of the lived realities of Israelis and Palestinians. The upcoming events, called Reconciliation Not Revenge, represent a deepening of that dialogue. The events are free and open to the public. They are:

  • Friday, March 1, 7:30 PM, Mount Zion Temple, 1300 Summit, St. Paul. (All are welcome to join Sabbath Services at 6:30 PM)
  • Sunday, March 3, 9:30 AM, Gloria Dei Lutheran, 700 S. Snelling, St. Paul. (All are welcome to join services at 8:45 or 10:45 AM)
  • Sunday, March 3, 2 PM, Islamic Center of MN, 1401 Gardena NE, Fridley. (All are welcome to join a 1:30 PM prayer service. The 2 PM event includes viewing the film Two Sided Story, which features the work of The Parents Circle, with a Q&A to follow.)

The Middle Project - Preparing Ethical Leaders for a Just Society

Middle Collegiate Church, New York

2013 conference, April 13-16

Shifting demographics in our nation make it clear that our multiracial/multicultural future is now. Learning how to help congregations grow more diverse racially, economically, and culturally helps us rehearse God's vision of justice and peace. Middle Church is an example of how an emphasis on justice and working toward meaningful change are key to attracting those seeking authentic communities-the unaffiliated and young adults. Read more: http://www.middleproject.org/conference-2013
