communityCOMMUNITY NEWS

Greetings UTS Community
,

As you know by now, the Cokesbury Bookstore is closing in March. So, what to do with all that space? I would like your ideas! The bookstore occupies excellent "downtown real estate" and we want to use it for something that benefits students and staff the best way possible. Cokesbury will leave or take their fixtures as we choose, and the seminary is prepared to make a reasonable investment to convert the space. Please email me at [email protected] or drop off something on paper at my office.

Thanks for your help!

Tom Lockhart, Vice President for Finance and Administration

Narrative Resources for Pastoral Counseling

Tuesday, February 12, 2013
9:00 AM - 3:30 PM
In this course we will focus on Narrative Counseling theory and the resources it offers to pastoral caregivers. This Narrative Counseling approach, highly influenced by various liberation theories, reflects an attentiveness to both culture and person. It is deeply respectful, relies on a consultative rather than an expert model, and is elegant in both its simplicity and thoroughness. Narrative theory's efficient and effective qualities as well as the de-centering of the counselor in the counseling process make this approach particularly well-suited to both parish pastors and to pastoral care specialists. This one-day course is open to the public.

at The Celtic Junction (836 North Prior in St. Paul, just north of University, between Raymond and Fairview)

Sacred Harp (aka Shape Note singing) continues a 200 year-old tradition of non-denominational hymns and gospel songs, written with shaped note heads. Singers sit in a square, sing in four parts, a cappella, with uninhibited vigor. The music has a distinctive open and modal sound, exuberant, rhythmic, and full of feeling. Visitors are encouraged to join in the singing or are welcome to just listen. Songbooks available for use at the singing; potluck lunch and child care also available during the day.

For the Love of God Take a Break

A Young Clergy Retreat for Spiritual Renewal

January 31 - February 2, 2013

Pilgrim Center, Green Lake, Wisconsin

This retreat is designed for the 2030 clergy to pause in their ministry and breathe deep. The hope is that clergy are able to connect with one another and learn from each other. Barbara Anne Keely will lead two sessions on Spiritual Disciplines. When ministry takes over our lives, we forget to stop and take a break, so come and remember what it feels like to be you, again. And for those not in the 2030 Clergy Network, you are welcome to join...because in the United Church of Christ: All are Welcome! Brochure with retreat schedule, costs and financial assistance, as well as registration info.  From an alum planning the retreat: "this is a great opportunity for those graduating with MDivs to attend. It would be a great way for them to connect with other "younger" clergy, since this retreat will be geared to the 2030 network of clergy in the UCC."

Reconciliation Not Revenge

Local Muslim, Jewish and Christian Communities Come Together to Learn From Middle East Peace and Reconciliation Efforts

Two men - a Palestinian and an Israeli - are coming to the Twin Cities this March to share their stories of pain and hope. Like so many in the region, both men have lost close family members to the ongoing fighting. They also have an inspiring story to tell; they belong to a group called The Parents Circle - Families Forum which is working towards peace, reconciliation, and tolerance in their troubled homeland.

From March 1-3, Wajih Tmaiza of Hebron and Roi Golan of Tel Aviv will be speaking at events at the Islamic Center of Minnesota, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, and Mount Zion Temple. These three religious communities have collaborated on prior public dialogues in an effort to create a more nuanced, balanced, and informed understanding of the lived realities of Israelis and Palestinians. The upcoming events, called Reconciliation Not Revenge, represent a deepening of that dialogue. The events are free and open to the public. They are:

  • Friday, March 1, 7:30 PM, Mount Zion Temple, 1300 Summit, St. Paul. (All are welcome to join Sabbath Services at 6:30 PM)
  • Sunday, March 3, 9:30 AM, Gloria Dei Lutheran, 700 S. Snelling, St. Paul. (All are welcome to join services at 8:45 or 10:45 AM)
  • Sunday, March 3, 2 PM, Islamic Center of MN, 1401 Gardena NE, Fridley. (All are welcome to join a 1:30 PM prayer service. The 2 PM event includes viewing the film Two Sided Story, which features the work of The Parents Circle, with a Q&A to follow.)
