FROM THE PRESIDENT

It's with deep sadness that I share with you information on three people who are dear to United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and have recently died. Each of these individuals has had a tremendous and lasting impact on the life of United. We are profoundly grateful to them for their many contributions and stewardship and want to extend United's sympathy to their families and friends.

Harriet Spencer

Harriet Spencer's journey with United began in the 1970s when she took a class in the Old Testament on the advice of her friend Bobbie Piper who had earned a Master of Arts degree at United. From this sampling of theological education, Harriet began what would become a long-term friendship with the seminary.

Alice Strobel

Alice Strobel, secretary to United's founding dean, Louis Gunnemann, registrar, and director of academic services, died at her home on December 15. In 1962, Alice arrived at United with her husband Robert Strobel, who was appointed professor of Christian nurture. She didn't leave the seminary until her retirement in 1987.

Paul Schilling

Paul Schilling, emeritus trustee, passed away on November 20 in Carefree, Ariz. Paul and his wife Mary established the Paul K. and Mary L. Schilling Chair in Leadership and Economic Life of the Church because Paul felt strongly that ministers needed to be educated to handle the essential administrative work of a church.

We have a problem here at UTS ... we're too dedicated to coming into work or school when we're sick!  The nasty bug is making its way around the buildings. Please don't spread it by dragging yourself in if you are sneezing, coughing or have a fever. Please use your best judgment, keeping in mind that you could give your bug to many other people.  If you do come in, please use lots of hand sanitizer and avoid contact as much as possible.

Narrative Resources for Pastoral Counseling

Tuesday, February 12, 2013
9:00 AM - 3:30 PM
In this course we will focus on Narrative Counseling theory and the resources it offers to pastoral caregivers. This Narrative Counseling approach, highly influenced by various liberation theories, reflects an attentiveness to both culture and person. It is deeply respectful, relies on a consultative rather than an expert model, and is elegant in both its simplicity and thoroughness. Narrative theory's efficient and effective qualities as well as the de-centering of the counselor in the counseling process make this approach particularly well-suited to both parish pastors and to pastoral care specialists. This one-day course is open to the public.

For the Love of God Take a Break

A Young Clergy Retreat for Spiritual Renewal

January 31 - February 2, 2013

Pilgrim Center, Green Lake, Wisconsin

This retreat is designed for the 2030 clergy to pause in their ministry and breathe deep. The hope is that clergy are able to connect with one another and learn from each other. Barbara Anne Keely will lead two sessions on Spiritual Disciplines. When ministry takes over our lives, we forget to stop and take a break, so come and remember what it feels like to be you, again. And for those not in the 2030 Clergy Network, you are welcome to join...because in the United Church of Christ: All are Welcome! Brochure with retreat schedule, costs and financial assistance, as well as registration info.  From an alum planning the retreat: "this is a great opportunity for those graduating with MDivs to attend. It would be a great way for them to connect with other "younger" clergy, since this retreat will be geared to the 2030 network of clergy in the UCC."
