FROM THE PRESIDENT
Barbara A. Holmes interview in Spokesman-Recorder
From a recent Interview by MSR News: "The United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities is currently celebrating 50 years of service. Since July of 2012, Reverend Dr. Barbara A. Holmes has been the first African American woman at its helm.
Her artist's sensibility, imaginative approach to ministry, and creative problem solving are already being viewed as both inspiring and what's needed to move the institution forward. Well known as an outstanding leader in theological education and an inspiring lecturer and teacher, Dr. Holmes hails from Memphis Theological Seminary, where she was professor of ethics and African American religious studies and served for five years as vice president/dean of academic affairs."

Journey to the heart of Celtic spirituality with guides Ramona Scarpace and Martha Postlethwaite.
The wild goose is the Celtic symbol for the Holy Spirit. " Peregrinatio" is the Celtic notion of pilgrimage.... not about going to a particular place, because God is everywhere, but about wandering, in search of one's own resurrection. Follow the squawking wildness Of God and the beauty of flying in formation with a community of others who long for contemplation, worship, nature and art. Join us. An informational meeting will be held Tues, January 15th from 5:00-6:30 PM at United Seminary.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Improved Wireless Internet at United
Today many of us connect through a variety of devices from netbooks to desktops, smart phones to tablets. To provide the best possible service to as many devices as possible, United has recently changed the way our network handles these connections. Here is what you will need to connect:
- Connect your WiFi enabled device to the "UTS" network
- Open your browser and enter the UTS wireless password
note: this password is subject to change, but for now remains unchanged
Please refer questions or comments to computersupport@unitedseminary.edu
Welcome January (winter) Term!
This is a good time to review emergency procedures.
Snow Emergency: A decision for closing will be made and communicated by 6:45 AM or during the day. Once the decision is made, staff, faculty and students will receive an automated phone call. The closing will be listed in KSTP and WCCO's school closing announcement. As soon as possible, a message to students and the public will be put on United's website and social media sites.
Fire: Move to the nearest exit and wait outside for further instructions or an "all clear" signal from Brandon, Tom or Eric. We will have a fire drill sometime in the next few weeks.
Tornado: go to the student mailboxes area by the Context Café. Wait for the all-clear from Brandon, Tom or Eric.
Terrorist or hostage situation:
- If the threat is potential, call Brandon (763-245-0777) or Eric (651-724-0056)
- If the threat is imminent, go to the nearest room, lock the door, call 9-1-1 and then Brandon or Eric
- If phone numbers are not available, use a seminary phone to dial 799, which will page all speaker phones. Say "Brandon, please come to [wherever you are]. This will be a code for all of us that there is a problem.
- In a classroom, use a cell phone to call Brandon or Eric. Their numbers will be posted in the classrooms. They will pass the word to other classrooms if necessary.
- To alert everyone to a campus lock down we will use the automated emergency phone calling system described below.
Automated phone system: We subscribe to a service that will send a voice message to the number we have on file for faculty, staff and students. You can also receive a text message and email if you chose. If your preferred contact phone number has changed since last fall, please email Tom Lockhart to update.

INSTITUTE FOR THE SUPPORT OF PASTORAL MINISTRIES
Narrative Resources for Pastoral Counseling
Tuesday, February 12, 2013
In this course we will focus on Narrative Counseling theory and the resources it offers to pastoral caregivers. This Narrative Counseling approach, highly influenced by various liberation theories, reflects an attentiveness to both culture and person. It is deeply respectful, relies on a consultative rather than an expert model, and is elegant in both its simplicity and thoroughness. Narrative theory's efficient and effective qualities as well as the de-centering of the counselor in the counseling process make this approach particularly well-suited to both parish pastors and to pastoral care specialists. This one-day course is open to the public. Instructor: Christie Neuger, Founder and Director of The Institute
Fee: $65.00, $35.00 for students in a degree program at United
Deadline to register: Tuesday, February 5
